🦉 The Ural owl (Strix uralensis)

  • Strix strigis (lat.) owl; strideo (lat.) to hiss, whistle
  • uralensis Uralic

This beautiful owl is called the long-tailed owl.
All because of its long, wedge-shaped tail, thanks to which the bird got its name.
This feathered ghost prefers to hunt in dense mixed forests. Actually, in such a place I see them every year, in October.

It was not for nothing that I called it a feathered ghost. The hunting habits of the long-tailed owl are a model of silent mastery. It can sit on a perch for hours, blending in with the tree trunk, and then silently swoop down on its prey. Its menu consists of mice, voles, and sometimes squirrels. It is curious that these owls often occupy old buzzard or hawk nests, only slightly renovating them.
