馃 The ruff (Calidris pugnax)
- Calidris kalidris or skalidris (Greek) unknown bird mentioned by Aristotle
- pugnax Latin: pugna battle, struggle, pugnax warlike, pugnacious
These long-legged pinocchios live in the northern latitudes of Eurasia, which is why they cannot be found in my region. However, they can be found when they migrate south. And this happens around the end of September.
Which is exactly what happened to me that day. I was on the river, which by that time had already become shallow, exposing stones. A small flock of these sandpipers was resting on the rocks. With difficulty, I got closer to them, jumping over stones.
