π¦ The common tern (Sterna hirundo)
- Sterna stearn, starn (Old English) tern
- hirundo (Latin) swallow
These graceful birds with sharp shapes constantly fly over the city river. They arrive late, around mid-May. And apparently, the city river in my city serves as a βhunting groundβ for them, because these birds nest in colonies, which I have not seen within the city.
Their hunting method is interesting. This is a search flight at an altitude of several meters. And seeing the prey, the bird hovers quickly, fluttering its wings, then quickly dives and dives under the water for the fish.
