🦉 The Eurasian hobby (Falco subbuteo)

• Falco phalcōn (Greek), falco (Lat.) falcon; the word falco is derived from falx (sickle, scythe) and means "curved in the form of a sickle", which is associated with the shape of a falcon's wing in flight or its powerful sickle-shaped claws (Gotch, 1981)
• subbuteo lat.: sub below, under, close to.., partly, buteo buzzard

The bird encyclopedia says that these predators nest in forests adjacent to open spaces. This is true. Do you see the tall green coniferous trees in the photo? In these places there is a nest of these birds.

Moreover, since winter they always return to their last year’s nests. Or they settle somewhere nearby.

Every spring, at the end of May, I visit these places. And I always see the same picture. Hobby chases and attacks black kites flying nearby.
