🦉 The white-backed woodpecker (Dendrocopos leucotos)

• Dendrocopos (Greek): dendron - tree, coptō - to hit, beat
• leucotos (Greek): leukos - white, nōton - back

I see this species of woodpecker much less often than the well-known Great Spotted Woodpecker.
Most likely he is more wild and avoids places where people live. While I can easily see a Great Spotted Woodpecker in city parks, I have never seen this woodpecker within the city. On the contrary, this woodpecker prefers difficult-to-pass forest areas filled with diseased and wind-fallen trees.

Which, in fact, is what you can see in my photos. These guys love to inspect fallen trees. The easiest time to see them is in the fall, when the tall grass and thickets disappear and hard-to-reach areas of the forest become easier to access.
