🦉 The black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius)

This tough guy is hard to miss in the forests. He has a memorable, unusual and loud voice that can be heard from afar. Also unusual in appearance, stylish black plumage, long neck, crazy light eyes and a red cap on his head. In males this cap is long, covering the entire top of the head, while in females it is small at the back of the head.

I met them both in mixed and coniferous forests. They always leave characteristic traces of their activity in the form of a small pile of wood chips under the trees, as well as stripped trees with stripped bark.
