馃 The black kite (Milvus migrans)
- Milvus (lat) - kite
- migrans (lat.) - migrating
The most famous birds of prey in my city. At the very beginning of April they begin to arrive, and at first they are in the forests, then after a week or two they can already be seen in city yards.
But still they are inferior predators. They are able to fish in the river, which they do in the summer, they are able to catch squirrels and chipmunks, but they do it with difficulty. However, they will prefer to eat carrion.
They circle over city yards and inspect trash cans for anything edible. They especially love pigeons crushed by cars.
It鈥檚 all about their muscle mass, which is small in comparison with other birds of prey. Simply put, they cannot dive down as quickly as falcons, for example, do.
