Amigos de hive, está es mi nueva historia el viaje a el desierto rojo comenzó un día antes, saliendo desde Medellín con rumbo al sur del país. La emoción era inmensa: íba en busca de un lugar único, lleno de historia y belleza natural. Después de varias horas de carretera, finalmente llegamos a un hospedaje en las cercanías del desierto. Era modesto, pero acogedor, perfecto para descansar antes de la aventura que nos esperaba.
Friends of hive, this is my new story, the trip to the red desert began a day before, leaving Medellin heading to the south of the country. The excitement was immense: I was in search of a unique place, full of history and natural beauty. After several hours on the road, we finally arrived at a lodge near the desert. It was modest but cozy, perfect to rest before the adventure that awaited us.
Al día siguiente, se decidio emprender el trayecto hacia el Desierto Rojo, también conocido como el Desierto de La Tatacoa. Aunque está un poco retirado del hospedaje, el camino valió cada minuto. A medida que nos acercábamos, el paisaje comenzaba a transformarse. De pronto, frente a nosotros apareció un mundo completamente distinto: una vasta extensión de tierra esculpida por el viento y el tiempo, con colores que parecían sacados de una pintura: tonos de amarillo oscuro, mostaza y naranja vibrante nos rodeaban. Era un espectáculo natural difícil de describir con palabras.
The next day, it was decided to start the journey to the Red Desert, also known as the Tatacoa Desert. Although it is a bit far from the lodge, the drive was worth every minute. As we got closer, the landscape began to transform. Suddenly, a completely different world appeared before us: a vast expanse of land sculpted by wind and time, with colors that looked like something out of a painting: shades of dark yellow, mustard and vibrant orange surrounded us. It was a natural spectacle difficult to describe in words.
Lo más impresionante es pensar que este lugar, hoy árido y seco, fue hace millones de años un exuberante bosque tropical. Con el paso del tiempo, y por efectos climáticos y geológicos, el ecosistema se transformó, dejando al descubierto esta maravilla natural que parece de otro planeta. La erosión del terreno ha moldeado figuras únicas, cañones y montañas abiertas que aún resisten el paso del tiempo.
The most impressive thing is to think that this place, today arid and dry, was millions of years ago a lush tropical forest. With the passage of time, and due to climatic and geological effects, the ecosystem was transformed, revealing this natural wonder that seems to be from another planet. The erosion of the land has molded unique shapes, canyons and open mountains that still resist the passage of time.
Estuvimos alrededor de una hora recorriendo este magnífico lugar, tomando fotografías y contemplando las formas que la naturaleza ha esculpido con paciencia infinita. A pesar de que nos llovió ligeramente, esto no fue un obstáculo para seguir explorando. Eso sí, es importante saber que cuando llueve, la entrada puede restringirse. El terreno es frágil y se busca preservar su estado original, por lo que lo ideal es recorrerlo con un guía autorizado que explique y cuide el entorno.
We spent about an hour touring this magnificent place, taking pictures and contemplating the forms that nature has sculpted with infinite patience. Although it rained lightly, this was not an obstacle to continue exploring. However, it is important to know that when it rains, the entrance can be restricted. The terrain is fragile and the aim is to preserve its original state, so the ideal is to walk through it with an authorized guide who will explain and take care of the environment.
Nota importante para llegar al Desierto Rojo (La Tatacoa): Desde Medellín, se debe tomar la vía hacia Neiva, capital del Huila. Desde allí, el trayecto continúa hacia el municipio de Villavieja, que es la puerta de entrada al desierto. Se puede llegar en bus, carro particular o en excursiones organizadas. Desde Villavieja, se accede al desierto por carretera destapada, y es recomendable contar con transporte adecuado o contratar un guía local que facilite el recorrido y brinde información valiosa del lugar.
Important note to get to the Red Desert (La Tatacoa): From Medellin, take the road to Neiva, capital of Huila. From there, the route continues to the municipality of Villavieja, which is the gateway to the desert. It can be reached by bus, private car or organized excursions. From Villavieja, the desert is accessed by unpaved road, and it is advisable to have adequate transportation or hire a local guide to facilitate the tour and provide valuable information about the place.
Terminando nuestra caminata por los senderos del Desierto Rojo, el paisaje seguía sorprendiéndonos. A lo largo del recorrido, se podían observar muchísimos cactus de distintas formas y tamaños, resistentes y majestuosos en medio del terreno árido. Entre ellos, descubrimos una planta que muchos lugareños consideran especial: la planta del "Espinazo del Diablo" o Euphorbia tithymaloides, a la que se le atribuyen poderes místicos y se dice que cumple los deseos si se le cuida con fe y respeto. Es una creencia popular que ha pasado de generación en generación en la región.
El desierto es un verdadero museo natural al aire libre. Sus estructuras están esculpidas por la fuerza del viento a lo largo de los siglos, formando montañas abiertas, cañones y figuras que parecen talladas por manos invisibles. Entre los cactus también crecen otras plantas adaptadas al clima seco, y aunque no tuve la fortuna de verlos, sé que allí habitan pequeños animalitos como lagartos, aves y hasta zorros, que se esconden entre las grietas del terreno.
Esta fue, sin duda, una experiencia muy bonita y enriquecedora. Sentir el silencio del desierto, observar su fuerza y su historia marcada en cada rincón, fue algo que quedará guardado en mi memoria para siempre.
As we finished our hike through the Red Desert trails, the landscape continued to amaze us. Along the way, we could observe many cacti of different shapes and sizes, resistant and majestic in the middle of the arid terrain. Among them, we discovered a plant that many locals consider special: the "Devil's Backbone" plant or Euphorbia tithymaloides, which is attributed mystical powers and is said to fulfill wishes if cared for with faith and respect. It is a popular belief that has passed from generation to generation in the region.
The desert is a true natural open-air museum. Its structures are sculpted by the force of the wind over the centuries, forming open mountains, canyons and figures that seem carved by invisible hands. Among the cactus also grow other plants adapted to the dry climate, and although I was not fortunate enough to see them, I know that small animals such as lizards, birds and even foxes live there, hiding in the crevices of the ground.
This was, without a doubt, a very beautiful and enriching experience. Feeling the silence of the desert, observing its strength and its history marked in every corner, was something that will remain in my memory forever.
