"Silence That an Angel Has Passed."
Greetings to all my dear friends who always come to the Community of Literatos because here we can share that deep relationship with literature that passions us and unites us in a no less passionate dialogue and exchanges that make our interest and motivation grow more and more every day for that way of saying things, of giving testimony of all circumstances, experiences and thoughts in aesthetically beautiful and moving ways.
It is beautiful to wake up and have our senses' first contact be with the extraordinary song by Silvio Rodríguez "Ángel para un final". For those who don't know it, I gladly share the song with you and from there I go on to make a comment perhaps unnecessary but with the detail of the reading I make of it and right away I tell you about what I have managed to trace regarding the tradition that when in the middle of a conversation a silence suddenly appears, many of us say that "an angel has passed".
Silvio, in his genius as a troubadour who plays with words like someone handling an instrument tuned to the extreme, takes that popular expression and turns it into a poem of heart-wrenching love. But careful, let's not get it wrong, because the angel the Cuban speaks of is not the same one we invoke at a gathering when we all fall silent at the same time. Silvio's angel, that one that passes and steals the voice, does not come to bring love but to seal its end. It is the angel of forgetting, the most terrible, the implacable, the most ferocious, that kisses and embraces to say goodbye, to sentence, to leave the lyrical subject in that silence that stretches on and from which he confesses that he still hasn't finished being silent.
What a way to turn a set phrase on its head and turn it into a meditation on the impossibility of forgetting.
But let's go to the origin of this expression that we use so much and that in Cuba, let me tell you, is so deeply rooted that we hear it from childhood in the mouths of our grandparents, our parents, any neighbor who in the middle of a lively chat sees how suddenly everyone goes quiet and then lets out with a complicit smile: "an angel has passed."
The thing comes from afar, from very far. In ancient Rome there was a curious and beautiful custom: when someone mentioned the name of a deceased person during a conversation, those present would keep a few moments of silence as a sign of respect and homage. It wasn't an uncomfortable silence, it was a silence that honored the memory of the one who was no longer there. A gesture deeply rooted in that culture that understood that naming the dead was in some way making them present.
Over time, that pagan practice was absorbed by Christianity and transformed. The spirit of the deceased became an angel that passed through the place when an unexpected silence occurred, and those moments of pause were used to pray in their memory. That is how the expression was born that has endured to our days and that we, without thinking of the dead or prayers, continue to use as a poetic way of alluding to those inexplicable pauses that take us by surprise in the middle of conversation.
Because in Cuba, where the word is legal tender and voices overlap like bodies in an embrace, silence is an anomaly. A parenthesis that must be justified, that must be named so that it loses its weight and we can move on. And what better way to name it than with this expression that holds within itself centuries of history, of respect, of faith and oral tradition passed down from generation to generation.
Silence that an angel has passed, silence that stops us and looks at us, silence that is not emptiness but presence. Because the angel, whether you believe in it or not, keeps passing among us every time words escape us and we find ourselves suspended in that magical instant in which we all breathe at the same time and life stops for a second to remind us that not everything needs to be said, that sometimes silence says more than any speech, that sometimes being quiet is the deepest way of being together.
So next time at a gathering everyone goes quiet without knowing why, smile and say: an angel has passed. And perhaps, just perhaps, if you listen carefully, you can hear the rustle of its wings carrying the words away to return them to us transformed into poetry.
Because in the end, as Silvio sings:
They say that when a silence / appeared between two / it was that an angel was passing / that stole their voice.
And there was such silence the day / that it was our turn to forget / that in such a way I still / haven't finished being quiet.
And in that "still," in that pause that doesn't quite resolve itself, lies all the truth of heartbreak and all the truth of life: that there are silences that stay with us, that accompany us like angels that don't quite leave, that remind us that what was, was, and that although words may not return, the echo of what we lived still resonates in the depths of those of us who knew how to love.
And that, dear friends, is literature. It is life. It is angel that passes and leaves us, for an instant, breathless, but with our hearts full.
Thank you for reading me, for sharing, for making this space a place where silence too has a voice.
