Afternoon
(For Lalo’s Magazine)
Let’s pluck an eye from the afternoon,
an arm from the sea, a tooth from the night,
a century from time, a sleepless night from the sun,
and gather it all into a potion of love.
Let’s give a portion to the sick world,
one that sweeps misery away with the arm of the sea,
carries sorrow off for a century,
and plants a sun in the blind eye.
Let’s do nothing with the tooth—
there is already enough darkness.
I rejoice in the thought that the night
has one less tooth
with which to bite my brothers.

Tarde

Arranquémosle un ojo a la tarde
un brazo al mar, un diente a la noche
un siglo al tiempo, un desvelo al sol
y juntemos todo en una poción de amor.
Démosle una ración al mundo enfermo
que barra la miseria con el brazo de mar
que se lleve la tristeza por un siglo
y siembre un sol al ojo ciego.
Con el diente no hagamos nada
ya hay bastante oscuridad,
me regocijo en la idea que la noche
tenga un diente de menos
para morder a mis hermanos.
