A few days ago, I have been doing things that if I told my mum she would not have believed her ears. I made her eat things that if I had told her about the combo she would have refused to eat, with excuses that it would purge her stomach or it was not good for consumption or that was not how she was taught.
I think sometimes life should not just be bored with doing the same thing over and over again or using one method to do something or prepare a meal. Sometimes we need to try new things, try new recipes, try new combos.
My mum has always believed in eating certain kinds of foods without wanting to try out new foods. She also thought that it is only her way of cooking or the way she was taught by her parents that is the best and only way. Sometimes I do my research and find out new methods of cooking or new foods and when I want to introduce them she tries to kick against the idea. I make it clear to her that I am a grown up and will cook any food the way I deem fit and anytime she wants to cook hers, she can cook it the way she deems fit too.
Most times when I visit my mum, I prefer making meals when she is not around or without her supervision. The other day, I bought three different kinds of leaves from the market and used them to prepare a particular soup, but I made one other leaf more than the rest. She first kicked against the combo, but I went ahead to cook it and when I was done, she ate it and loved the soup so much. She told me she had learnt a new strategy from me. I smiled and shook my head in amusement.
Today I prepared wateryam and palmoil sauce. I used a little amount of sugar to cook the water yam and she did not know. When we were eating it together, she complimented the water yam for being delicious by tasting slightly sweet and told me that it was a very good species of water yam. I wanted to burst into laughter, but I held my peace in order not to make her choke in case my outburst made her find out. I excused myself from where we were eating together, ran into my room and bursted out laughing so loud. I laughed at the so-called species of water yam and how she praised her water yam for being a sweet species. Come off it, she will never find out it was sugar I used in cooking it. I bursted out in laughter.
When I returned to continue eating, she asked me if I had a call, and that she heard me laughing out loud. I said yes, that I was on a very funny call. Anyways, my phone gave me a hard time today, so I could not take a photo of the boiled wateryam and palmoil. Maybe next time I will show you.
Well, another soup I tried is here although this one is not new but my mom does not cook this at home. This food belongs to another tribe, so not everyone here knows how to cook it. I watched it on a social media platform and decided to try it out. I used pounded cocoyam to make this one and it was very delicious. Everyone at home loved it, including my selective mum.
Photos are mine and were taken with my Infinix smart 5 phone camera.
