[ESP-ING] In the middle of an unhealthy coexistence || En el medio de una convivencia insana
An important part of the environment in which you live is the people around you: your neighbors. When we come to live in a new place, we always try to be cordial, friendly and helpful at all times. It should be essential to always have a friendly greeting to offer to the people you encounter every day, who you know will always be close to you. Unfortunately, it doesn't always happen that way.
Even more you should try to have a good relationship and communication with your neighbors when you live in an apartment building. One of the main reasons is that, in general, when there is an inconvenience in relation to the environment that surrounds them, it affects them all equally, when that happens, it is nice to feel supported, being the resolution of the conflict faster and more organized.
Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Since I arrived almost 5 years ago just, I believe I have shown myself to be a gentle, kind and polite person. Although I only knew most of them by face as we passed each other in the hallways, I would greet them and always wished them a good day, and they would do the same. However, I think it all started the day I decided to play music late. I put it on because I remember it was a special occasion, I didn't use to do it, I knew the unwritten rules of good coexistence, it was of my full knowledge that it was frowned upon, it bothered the others who were so close to me, being a building, I felt them all in the same house. In the following days, when I bumped into someone, they did not greet me back, when I realized, they all withdrew their greetings; they were not even cordial enough to respond to my good morning.
People I used to chat with didn't even respond to me. I felt bad, they did not let me at least apologize for having played the music that day, their radical attitude made me feel demoralized. Out of 12 neighbors, there had been 10 who had agreed, or had made a neighborhood meeting to take away my speech for the atrocious fact of playing loud music only once. That was the only reason I could have given them, even though I used to listen to other people's music late at night, it was not a matter of reproach on my part. The disappointment was even greater when I unintentionally overheard hallway conversations; neighbors using unkind adjectives about other neighbors who I later saw greeting each other as the best of friends. I realized everything that day.
That doubt is still sown in me; Would it have been the music? Or the fact that I violated the rules without even being trusted to do so was enough to be judged and discarded? Several years have passed, I have not been able to clear that doubt, for fear of some bad treatment, I have not had the courage to face any of them, apparently they are all united, union that was tightened with the years of living together. They say that you are what you do, not what you say; they have been proof of that.
"Don't take it, that woman is troublesome, let it get damaged, it is preferable" were the words of one of them to a new neighbor ,who arrived a few months ago, when he went to rescue our mop, while it was mounted on a ladder, which had fallen into the window of another apartment, I had previously asked him that favor taking advantage of the fact that he would make use of a ladder. That gave us a lot of information about who we were surrounded by.
It is sad, but I live praying that an emergency never happens while I am alone at home. I feel that I cannot count on anyone around me, even though I feel that closeness because we live in the same house, I am not able to trust. Unfortunately, there are many doubts that plague me about whether they would call me in case of an accident. However, despite all the rudeness I have had to endure, I do not lose hope of improving the relationship with my neighbors, as it feels good to feel that support and that you will always have people close by that you can count on in case something out of the ordinary happens. I would say that it is a fundamental part of knowing that you can turn to them, I would settle for at least one.
