In Bali, rice fields are by themselves an attraction; such that you even have tourist traps like the one near Ubud, where you even have to pay if you decide to stop the car to take a photo!
But this isn't a post about rice fields. It's about their visitors; and since this a #featheredfriday post, I'm talking about the winged visitors kind!
Yep, these guys like rice as well! Not the way we humans eat it, but they still are a common presence in the fields.
Javan munias belong to the Estrildidae family; the members of this family normally live in groups, and are seed eaters; but althout their body shape and habits are similar, there's a huge variation in plummage colours and patterns.
Their beak gives us a clue about their feeding habits, since seed eaters have thick, short and pointy beaks.
These munias were one of the most common ones I've seen during the vacations.
But there were more species, much more. Being among the rice sometimes makes it harder to get decent photos; fortunately some little ones do come to open areas.
As you can see, different colours, but pretty similar body types. Knowing the common traits of different bird species do help in making the identification a little easier, or at least narrow it to fewer possible species.
And looking at that beak, you can now probably guess what kind of diet this little one has, right? If not... then I caught you: you just looked at the photos! 馃槀 馃槈
