Here are a few sightings for the week on this #featheredfriday

The first sighting was a bright red flash with an unusual call. A summer tanager finally.

It's been a while since I've seen one around. Though now that I remember it the last time I have seen them was on an alder tree.

This guy was quite tame and was inspecting all the seeds for insects. I wasn't able to get very close as he was high up in the tree.

Nearby I heard another unusual call. It was two red headed woodpeckers. Over the years this dead tree has really been pecked to death.

It probably died because it was growing in the middle of a swamp. Now these guys get to look for insects in it. I have seen many photos where two males are pecking trees opposite each other like this. I wonder if they are communally hunting for wood borers and other insects inside? On taps the heck out of the tree while the other one feels for movement under the wood maybe?

Now for another splash of red. The redwings are in full fight mode as they have established territories and are making nests at the base of the reeds. You just have to be careful not to get too close. Otherwise its divebomb and pecking time.

They have plenty of habitat to raise their young in. But they are quite territorial against each other and anything else that comes in their vicinity. I hope one day to be able to see one of their nests as the eggs have a nice blue tint to them with interesting black swirls on them. But I would be at risk of getting pecked.

That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)
