Riding along the canals of Anbar, I observed the daily routines of the local working class. I passed fisherwomen handling their catch, weary boat travelers, and merchants eating apples while transporting vegetables by boat. Continuing down the riverbank, I encountered local traders sharing drinks beside piles of market goods.
I decided to ride along the canals surrounding Anbar to observe the area and see what I could discover along the waterways. The first sight to catch my attention was a local woman sitting by the bank with a fishing rod, pulling in a impressive catch of large fish.
Just behind her, another woman worked steadily at mending a large fishing net, likely operating as part of the same trade outfit.
Further down the canal, several people navigated a small boat, their pale faces and tired expressions reflected the hard, miserable lives they endured.
As I approached the bank, a flock of birds scattered from the reeds and took flight into the sky.
Moving further along the water, I spotted a merchant sitting aboard a vessel loaded with fresh vegetables, quietly eating an apple.
Nearby, several other boats had gathered together in the middle of the canal, but as soon as I rode up, the rowers split apart and began steering off in different directions to transport their passengers.
Minutes later, I encountered yet another trader eating an apple amidst a heavy cargo of fresh produce. It seemed odd for these merchants to linger in the middle of the canal where potential buyers were scarce, rather than heading straight for the stalls of the local market.
Closer to the shoreline, a group of men appeared in much better spirits, sharing drinks and engaging in lively conversation beside their anchored craft. Crates, baskets, and buckets overflowing with fresh fish and fruits lined the bank around them.
These men appeared to be local businessmen who had secured a solid shipment of goods, gathering to celebrate their haul before taking the stock to market for a profit.
