The backgammon game was nearing its sordid end. White would be gammoned, again. Brown was gloating.

White uttered a backgammon prayer

"Acey deucey!"

then tossed the dice.

That's when they both heard it. The footsteps.

"Don't worry" said Brown. "I hear that all the time. It's nothing."

But White wasn't so sure. The footsteps may have been tiny, they may have been very quiet, but they sounded as if they were just overhead. As White looked at the ceiling, the tossed dice came to a rest on the board.

"Acey deucey!" White cried exultantly.

"Big deal, White" said Brown. "You know you are going to be a LOSER."

The footsteps began to dance a jig as White took the move, then rolled again, praying "Acey Deucey!"

The jig overhead became louder, more frantic, as the dice came to a rest on another roll of acey deucey.

White stood in jubilation! The tempo of the jig overhead sped up, the steps heavier, so that the ceiling buckled and plaster began to fall on the board.

White rolled a third acey deucey, then a double six, to win the game.

The jig came to an end. Both Brown and White could hear a whimper above.

Brown said "OK Acey Deucey, you can come down now, I'll feed you."

This is my entry to mariannewest@mariannewest's weekend freewrite challenge, for which we can choose to write for any of the previous week's prompts. I chose "don't worry" for today's freewrite.

I'm also trying to write a story for The Ink Well Community's current weekly fiction challenge. The prompt for that challenge is footsteps. I've been trying to come up with something for that prompt for several days now, to no avail. Sometimes freewriting gets the story juices flowing more freely, and I think I have something to work with here. Thanks for reading.
