I welcome you all to my blog. The Hivenaija community never disappoints as they continue to give users interesting topics to talk about. At some point in our lives, we have all felt depressed, maybe because we were disappointed or things did not go as planned; instead of looking for other ways to make it work, we allowed depression to creep in.

Falling into depression is very easy, but fighting it and coming out victorious takes a lot of work and is a completely different thing. If one is not strong enough and not surrounded by the positive vibes they need to come out of depression, then they are never going to do so.

Gone are the days when we knew those who locked themselves up in a room as the depressed; these days, even people roaming the street are depressed. People try to hide their pain while they die on the inside and don't speak up. Fighting depression can be difficult, but it's possible to fight it. Depression attacks even kids when given the chance; it creeps in and does what it's known for (destruction).

Many people say happiness is free, but I still ask myself, "Why is it so difficult for one to stay happy forever then?" Depression can cause harm to one's mental health; it can push one into committing suicide. Depression kills faster than anything you can think of.

How I Cope With Depression

We all have different opinions about dealing with depression. To date, I still feel depressed sometimes, especially now that I am struggling to make ends meet. Little earnings with very high expenses is one of the major causes one falls into depression, and currently that's the story of my life: little earnings with expenses three times my earnings. But below are a few methods I use to fight off depression:

  • Don't Cut Yourself Off: The first thing depression does to its victims is cut them off from the rest of the world; they become silent, and once that's done, it starts to eat them up. Each time you feel depressed, just call a friend you know understands you, a friend that's jovial and can play around with you; you can see them in person or you can hold a conversation over the phone while they try to crack you up and get you out of the prison depression has put you in.

  • Surround Yourself With Positivity: We are humans, and our environment has a great effect on us. If you feel depressed, try to surround yourself with positivity, which is the complete opposite of depression. Once surrounded with positivity and positive people, depression will not get the chance to strike.

  • See A Therapist; If you can afford one, then it is advisable that you visit a therapist whenever you feel depression creeping up on you; that way, you can fight it off better. Since I cannot afford a therapist, I have my mom do the job for me; she encourages me when needed, and whenever I feel like the load is too much for me, I tell her, and I think she does it better than a professional therapist.

  • Communicate: Many people feel depressed and they keep it to themselves; they feel like if they communicate they might be laughed at or mocked, but the truth is that communication helps fight off depression. Once depression is involved be an open book, open up.
