Good evening, blog friends—how are you? Here I am again, taking you along on a tour of the Val di Nievole countryside. Today, we’re venturing a bit further afield to the area around Altopascio, a large municipality in the Lucca countryside situated right on the border of the Val di Nievole. Altopascio is a primarily industrial area, well-known because the industrialization era saw the birth of numerous factories there—especially paper mills and textile plants. Although located in the Lucca province, it borders the provinces of Pistoia and Pisa and covers a vast territory; while it was once almost entirely rural, the arrival of factories transformed it into a major employment hub for people from Lucca, Pistoia, and Pisa. However, we didn't visit the town itself but rather the surrounding countryside—specifically the areas of Spianate and Capanna. These are right next to Altopascio but remain almost entirely rural. Spianate, the first area we visited, actually feels more industrial; we found many factories and industrial plants interspersed with the occasional detached house. The factories were massive, and I get the impression that people mostly come here to work rather than to live. There are still many paper mills, likely supported by the proximity of rivers and a thriving industrial sector.

Hoy nos aventuramos un poco más lejos, hacia la zona de Altopascio, un gran municipio de la campiña de Lucca situado justo en el límite con Val di Nievole. Altopascio es una zona eminentemente industrial, conocida porque la era de la industrialización vio nacer allí numerosas fábricas, especialmente papeleras y plantas textiles. Aunque pertenece a la provincia de Lucca, limita con las provincias de Pistoia y Pisa y abarca un vasto territorio; si bien antaño era una zona casi totalmente rural, la llegada de las fábricas la transformó en un importante centro de empleo para los habitantes de Lucca, Pistoia y Pisa. To be honest, the factory section didn't really thrill me; I was much happier when we continued on toward Capanna, where I finally saw the rural side of the area again—the part I like best. I have nothing against industrial zones—they certainly have their own charm—but I prefer places with more nature. Indeed, as we went on, we found ourselves back amidst beautiful fields with large hay bales, barns, scattered trees (including the classic Tuscan cypresses), small streams, and renovated farmhouses—the kind of scenery I love. There were a few scattered sunflower fields here too, though they weren't as well-maintained as in other areas, along with some detached houses. Overall, I had expected more from the countryside in this region—which I’d heard great things about—so I was a bit disappointed compared to other rural areas I’ve visited, though it was still a pleasant outing.
