Maybe it's my gothic soul, but I love visiting churches and cemeteries, both long and fascinating in their own way, and also endowed with a special atmosphere of peace and calm. Today, in fact, I'm taking you to the Montecatini cemetery, a place I had already planned to visit because I'd seen some photos online from a group of cemetery enthusiasts (it's a little creepy, but it helps you discover beautiful and unique cemeteries). This cemetery is not far from the station and is very large. I believe it is the main cemetery in the city.
To get in, you have to take a long detour. I confess that at first I had difficulty getting in, but then there is the entrance a little away from the main road with the usual flower shop in front (in Italy, almost all cemeteries have one or more flower shops in front because it's customary to bring flowers to the graves). This cemetery is used for the tombs of ordinary people, while the Montecatini Alto cemetery preserves many historical tombs (don't worry, I'll visit that one soon too). However, it is a cemetery built around the end of the 19th century, so it's not exactly recent, but it has undergone various restorations, the last one in 2024, and it is much loved and appreciated by residents and tourists.

Hoy, de hecho, los llevo al cementerio de Montecatini, un lugar que ya ten铆a planeado visitar porque hab铆a visto algunas fotos en l铆nea de un grupo de entusiastas de los cementerios (es un poco espeluznante, pero ayuda a descubrir cementerios hermosos y 煤nicos). Este cementerio no est谩 lejos de la estaci贸n y es muy grande. Creo que es el cementerio principal de la ciudad. Para entrar, hay que dar un largo rodeo.
Confieso que al principio tuve dificultades para entrar, pero luego est谩 la entrada un poco apartada de la carretera principal con la t铆pica florister铆a enfrente (en Italia, casi todos los cementerios tienen una o m谩s florister铆as enfrente porque es costumbre llevar flores a las tumbas). Este cementerio alberga las tumbas de gente com煤n, mientras que el cementerio de Montecatini Alto conserva numerosas tumbas hist贸ricas (no se preocupen, tambi茅n lo visitar茅 pronto). Sin embargo, se trata de un cementerio construido a finales del siglo XIX, por lo que no es precisamente reciente, pero ha sido objeto de varias restauraciones, la 煤ltima en 2024, y es muy apreciado tanto por los residentes como por los turistas.
Upon entering the cemetery, you immediately see the chapels of somewhat more important families, with their two-tone red and white marble. While Pistoia is famous for its two-tone black and white, here it's red and white. This style characterizes most of the cemetery's buildings, from the small to the largest chapels, from the structure containing the burial niches to the surrounding memorial buildings with beautiful porticoes. It's an interesting style, in my opinion, for a beautiful cemetery.
The tombs, on the other hand, are mostly classical and simple, with marble or wooden headstones and crosses, but there are also more elaborate tombs, some with beautiful sculptures that obviously have religious references, Christs and Madonnas, some in a modern style, others classical. Inside the cemetery, there's also a large memorial dedicated to the victims of the Second World War, mostly soldiers but also civilians. The cemetery then ends with a somewhat simpler section, with rectangular chapels made of concrete or marble without any particular frills. In any case, it's a very beautiful cemetery to visit precisely because of its particular style. I hope you like it as much as I did. Al entrar en el cementerio, se aprecian de inmediato las capillas de las familias m谩s importantes, con su m谩rmol bicolor rojo y blanco. Si bien Pistoia es famosa por su m谩rmol bicolor blanco y negro, aqu铆 predomina el rojo y el blanco. Este estilo caracteriza la mayor铆a de los edificios del cementerio, desde las capillas m谩s peque帽as hasta las m谩s grandes, desde la estructura que alberga los nichos funerarios hasta los monumentos circundantes con hermosos p贸rticos.
En mi opini贸n, es un estilo interesante para un cementerio tan bello. Las tumbas, por otro lado, son en su mayor铆a cl谩sicas y sencillas, con l谩pidas y cruces de m谩rmol o madera, aunque tambi茅n hay tumbas m谩s elaboradas, algunas con bellas esculturas de claras referencias religiosas, como Cristos y V铆rgenes, algunas de estilo moderno y otras cl谩sicas. Dentro del cementerio, tambi茅n se encuentra un gran monumento dedicado a las v铆ctimas de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, principalmente soldados, pero tambi茅n civiles. El cementerio finaliza con una secci贸n algo m谩s sencilla, con capillas rectangulares de hormig贸n o m谩rmol, sin adornos especiales. En cualquier caso, es un cementerio precioso para visitar precisamente por su estilo particular.
