To be honest, I have told a white lie before in some situations , and I believe it's the same for most people as well. Growing up as a child, I was taught to embrace truth even in the point of death, and I was taught to be honest even in tough situations, and I grew up with that.
Telling lies became so fearful to me, and whenever I saw a person lying like his life depends in it, I usually shook my head. However, as I continue to grow into adulthood with many life experiences, I begin to see situations where truth can be very tough to deliver at some point, and if I do, it could have severe effects on human lives.
One of those experiences was when my mom was kidnapped. My grandma was worried that Mum's phones were switched off for days, and she has yet to hear from her since she left for the trip to the north. She never spoke with my mom to be sure she reached successfully, and that is enough to get her worried.
While we were in a tight situation, calling police, praying, and doing a lot, Grandma kept asking a thousand and one questions about my mom's whereabouts. I had no choice but to cook up white lies to tell her so she could be calm while we kept searching for Mum. If we had broken the news to her , knowing that she is suffering from high blood pressure, that truth of kidnapping may have affected grandma life. Yea, I saw the white lie as a narrow escape to save my grandma.
So do I think it is okay to tell a white lie when the truth might be devastating? Well, I will say yes, but only when it's needed, just like the case I described above. Personally, I am of the opinion that white lies shouldn't be used for personal gain. We shouldn't tell white lies to manipulate others or run away from our responsibility.
As long as you have a good intention and it's a temporary something, then it's fair enough to tell a white lie and protect something without causing harm to anyone. But then, truth remains the best option generally; there's no need to romance a lie. The way we present a truth with compassion can save us from troubles, and in our daily lives, we can't go wrong with telling the truth.
There are situations where white lies can help, but we shouldn't make it a habit at all; otherwise, we would have trust issues with people around us.
Overall, I will always choose to be honest.
