There was a storm in my area that resulted in a blackout in my area. No electricity anywhere around. I had nowhere to go to so I really needed my phone to keep me company and do all the little things online that my life is now about.
But my phone's battery was empty as there was no electricity to charge it. A friend of mine told me he was going to some Sports Betting shop to plug his phone. I didn't tell him, but I thought that was a little less dignified way to go about this, those Betting shops are usually filled with people charging, usually hot, you'd just find yourself seated there crampy as it is.
And my friend was doing this all because it was free or charge. I thought the best way to go about this was to go to a bar, buy a drink so you have the right to be there. If you're too broke you can just buy a bottle of cold water. Then sit by a fan, plug your phone, enjoy using your phone while you charge at the same time, while getting mesmerized by the fan.
That was my own plan. So I bid my friend farewell after telling him my plan and he told me how he doesn't want to spend even the slightest amount.
I went to the bar, the bar was also affected by the blackout and they didn't turn on their electricity generator. I left to another bar, and another, and another. Same story. I even went to a hotel's bar, a hotel that is supposed to have back up electricity for their guests. Same story.
I couldn't believe my eyes.
It took me about two hours to walk to all these places but yet I was still at square one. I didn't have any cash on me and because my phone's battery was empty I couldn't access my bank account to get some cash to pay the fare that would take me to another area where I can charge.
I couldn't walk to that area either because now I was tired and getting hungry. So what did I do?
I had to drag my rackety ass to the Betting shop my friend was and joined the crowd which was now more because I came later. I also couldn't get a good seat due to that lateness and couldn't get to use my phone while it was plugged because I sat so far from the socket.
So there I was cramped up in this crowded hot shop, I couldn't be on my phone, couldn't talk to my friend because I sat far from him too and he couldn't leave his spot as that meant he wouldn't be able to be on his phone and another person could take his seat.
I also couldn't leave my phone there with the plan of coming back to get it later because it might be stolen, and I couldn't expect my friend to do a good job at helping me watch it because he had his phone to distract him. Plus if you want something done it's usually best to do it yourself.
I was just there looking at the ceiling and that was to be my fate for at least an hour.
Not because I didn't have a better more dignified way I was ready to go even though it cost a little price. I did. I had the dignity, creativity, and ability to get to charge in a way better environment, but here I was with the other people who it didn't even cross their mind for a second to find a better way.
There's a lot to unpack and a lot of lessons to learn here. Not everyone you see in a situation couldn't do better. Also you can have the best intentions and ability but still get thrown into an ugly situation by life's many obstacles. A reminder to be humble.
