There are still many good people in this world. Unfortunately, some people change because of how they were treated by others.
Villains were indeed made. Those people who you see and think, “Oh, this person is not kind,” there is a possibility that they were once a very kind person until life changed them.
Back in 2011, I had a best friend. This guy was so generous and cheerful that sometimes I wondered if he even had any problems. But then, he had his own problems; he just didn't let his problems take away his happiness and generosity.
Even when he was angry, he still smiled. Fate brought us together, and I loved the moments I spent with him.
Those days were hard for me. I got tired of home food because it was a particular dish, and I just didn't want to eat it anymore. So most times, I would skip meals when I realized that was what had been prepared again.
This guy came into my life as a saviour because he was a macho guy. He had the strength I lacked, even though we were the same age. He would go out and do hard labour. Sometimes I escorted him there too, but I couldn't partake in it because I didn't have the strength.
After he was done with the day's work, we would go out together to a mama put and eat to our fill.
This wasn't a one-time thing. Whenever he finished work at night, he would look for me and take me out for food. Sometimes, if he didn't see me, he would even come and call me.
I think he knew I lacked money and food, so he decided to fill that space for me. Till now, I am still grateful to him.
Before he started taking me out for those night-spree meals, he would ask me if I wanted to buy something whenever he was buying. Every time, I would say no even though I wanted it.
I just couldn't get myself to say yes. I was not brought up that way.
It didn't take long before he noticed that my answer would always be no, so he stopped asking and just started giving me things.
And that is something I learnt from him. If you really want to give people something, don't ask them if they want it. Just give it to them.
If they reject it, then it means they don't want it.
Some people might be in need of help, but they still don't know how to say yes when the help comes. So be the man. Give it. Don't ask.
Those who like to say no also don't like asking people for help. So if you have a friend who you think needs help, don't wait for them to ask you before you render help to them.
Trust me, those people will always remember how you came up to save them when they didn't ask, because they don't really have many people around them due to their nature of not asking for help.
When I left home that same year for a greener pasture and got a job as a teacher, I went home after a year.
My friend, even though he still had his smile, lamented about how those he had helped could not even spare him something when he was in need because he couldn't find much hard labour to do anymore.
I could feel the pain in his words, even though he tried to hide it.
But then, I was there now. You have saved me once, and I am ready to do the same for you.
So I started taking him out for those night-spree meals too because I now had some money. Sadly, my vacation didn't last long, and I had to leave after two weeks.
I also gave him some little money, but one thing I noticed was that those ungrateful people had changed something about him.
He would not be that generous to everyone again, and maybe it is a good thing. You can't help everyone. You have to separate the users from the genuine ones. But one thing I still learnt from him is this: help people.
If people come to you hungry, make sure you don't let them go empty-handed.
It is the little you can do for them.
