This is an interesting topic that many of us crypto enthusiasts are interested in talking about, especially in this recent days when we've been seeing some greens and optimism is rising again. The @indiaunited community has now given the theme of this week's discussion to be: The Future of Crypto: What Will Cryptocurrency Look Like in the Next 5–10 Years? This is a link to the announcement post.
And here goes my reply:
When cryptocurrency started with Bitcoin in 2008 it was meant to be just a type of money that is transferrable online and does not need Banks.
Soon it became an asset for speculation. I wonder if Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin, ever saw this coming. There were currencies like the the USD, Pounds, Euro, Rupees, etc. that were used for everyday exchange but none of them became assets for speculation. None of them had the kind of volatility Bitcoin had. None of them were going up and down, none of them seemed to be on crazy rises like moving from 1$ value to $13 value all of a sudden.
All of this has made Bitcoin not to become just a currency for exchange. In fact almost everybody who uses Bitcoin uses it because of the possibility that their 1$ can turn into $10, etc. Yes, there are those who use it strictly for exchange but that is the minority of people.
So now that it has mainly become an asset for speculation rather than what it was really intended to be, what do I see happening next?
I see Bitcoin getting to $1million in the next 5-10 years. It seems that is an inevitability. Although there will be a lot of ups and downs before then.
When it gets to that amount it's volatility would be reduced because it would take a lot more outgoings and incomings to affect the price. And thus it would be a better currency for exchange, although it's use as an exchange currency wouldn't increase so much because there are other better cryptocurrencies for exchange like the USDT, and other stable coins.
I also see the Alt coin market remaining relevant and I see the Alt coin season which has been in doubt for a while now continuing. There would always come a bull run for Alt coins where the price goes X10 and above, and there would always come a bear period too where it loses value -X10 and above.
The reason why I think it would always be so is because there are huge whales with billions and trillions of dollars who profit from the controlling the market, and a bear market without end wouldn't favour their business model, neither would a bull market without end. It is through the ups and downs that the profit comes.
So, we'll always see it sway. Market manipulators wouldn't only focus on Bitcoin neglecting the altcoin market, because Altcoins offer something that Bitcoin doesn't, and that is extra volatility.
They'll also not abandon the Altcoins for memecoins even though memecoins offer more volatility than Altcoins because Altcoins offer something that memecoins don't, and that is increased trust and stability.
In a nutshell, extra volatility has it's uses but that has never been a reason for manipulators to abandon less volatile markets. Manipulators are in the FX market even though Bitcoin is more volatile, they are in the Bitcoin market even though Altcoins are more volatile, and they are in the Altcoin market even though memecoins are more volatile. See?
I've been talking about the movement of the cryptocurrency market like it is mainly moved by manipulators rather than the masses, and I've been saying so because the evidence is staggering.
Last year was supposed to have the Alt season due to the 4 year cycle so last year the masses mostly went all in expecting a bull run for Altcoins but that never happened despite all the buying the masses did in preparation.
It was just too clear that manipulation was in the mix and that there are a few people who hold the key to huge movements and the prices would never go up or down if they don't co-sign it.
Because if it was left to the masses alone there would have surely been an Alt season last year due to all of the buying and positioning.
It seems, though, that Altcoin prices would always be modest as Altcoins have not been known to be able to hold their values after bull runs. So expecting Ethereum to one day be oscillating between $20k and $50k seems like an impossibility. It can probably get to those amounts during some bull runs but it seems it would always be below 20k after bull runs.
Other Alt coins would probably never smell 20k per unit, except maybe something comes up with a huge use case, but it seems there'd always be only a handful of Cryptocurrencies that actualizes that kind of potential.
So having the top 100 Altcoins all being around $10k to $100k seems like something that would never happen. Although I might be wrong, I'm only saying this based on the fact that Altcoins are known to not be able to hold good value after bull runs.
Things can change, especially if big governments start having crypto reserves, and if the dollar keeps losing value like it is.
Different use cases for crypto would keep coming up. A few use cases would always be popular like Defi and tokenization. Also the use of Blockchain technology for record keeping and transparency purposes would keep growing in popularity and would one day be mainstream or close to it. This is possible in the the next 5-10 years.
The future would definitely be interesting to watch.
