I waited a long time for something that was not coming. Not dramatically. Just quietly, in the background, leaving a kind of open circuit in a relationship that could never fully close because the thing that needed saying never got said.
What i received instead of the real thing was the version that resolves the other person’s discomfort without actually addressing what happened to you. Statements that occupied the shape of an apology without the substance inside it. Words that were designed to make the awkwardness go away rather than to genuinely reckon with what had been done.
I know the difference now in a way i would not have known without being on the receiving end of the non-version repeatedly. A real apology names the specific thing. Not i am sorry things got complicated or i am sorry if you were hurt by that. The specific thing. What was done, what it caused, what is being done about it. Clear enough that the person receiving it knows you actually understand what happened rather than just that you would like the discomfort to be over.
The non-version serves the person giving it. It allows them to feel like the thing has been addressed without requiring them to actually face what they did clearly enough to name it.
The real version serves the person receiving it. It says i see what happened. I understand what it cost. I take that seriously.
Sitting on the receiving end of someone unwilling or unable to give the real thing taught me more about what the real thing requires than anything else could have. Because i felt the absence of it in a very specific way that informed exactly what i was going to make sure to provide when i owed one.
Give the real version when you owe it. It costs more and it matters more.
