Who should apologize first after an argument? The person who is WRONG.
There is this modern advice that says the person who wants peace should apologize first. It sounds mature, but let's be honest, it's destroying accountability.
And I asked, why should I apologize for wanting peace when you are the one who messed up?
Peace without justice is just pretending and I hate it.
If you are wrong, YOU should apologize. Period.
Know these.
Apologizing when you are not wrong is not peace, it's people-pleasing.
When the person who wants peace always apologizes first, what happens? The wrong person never learns. They will insult you, lie to you, hurt you, and then wait for YOU to come and say sorry because you want peace more.
You are training them to keep hurting you. Simple.
An apology is taking responsibility, not a peace offering.
An apology means I recognize what I did was wrong and I take responsibility for it. How can you take responsibility for something you didn't do?
If I didn't do anything wrong, what am I apologizing for?
For being hurt?
For having feelings?
To me, that doesn't make sense.
Real peace comes after real accountability.
Fake peace says let's just forget it happened without ever addressing what happened.
Real peace says I was wrong,
I hurt you, I am sorry.
How do we fix this?
Until the person who is wrong says those words, there is no real peace. There is only silence.
I have been the peace keeper before. I said sorry first just to end the fight. And guess what? The same argument came back the next week, and the week after that. Because the real issue was never resolved.
The day I stopped apologizing for things that were not my fault, my relationships actually became more peaceful.
So yes, if you are wrong, swallow your ego and apologize first.
It doesn't make you weak. It makes you mature.
And if you are not wrong, don't rush to say sorry just to keep the peace. Stand on the truth. Let the person who is wrong do the right thing.
Peace is beautiful, but truth is what holds peace together.
What do you think?
Should the wrong person apologize, or should the peace-lover apologize first?
Let's talk in the comments.
