It was sad to see this from Sam Altman. When I saw this all I could think of was that this guy imagined the worst but still went ahead to launch and push AI as much as he's been doing.
He definitely saw a vision of millions of people being rendered unemployed and having to live on very little in a world that switched up on them after all their years of getting properly equipped for it.
But he still launched it.
This doesn't mean he is evil, though. AI has always been just a matter of time. If he and his crew didn't launch OpenAI, someone else would have soon enough, and it is arguable that if someone else was going to do it then why not him if he can? So that he can make some money for himself and his generation as a pioneer.
AI is already rendering a lot of people jobless, and the number is supposed to multiply as time goes on. And yes, AI is creating new jobs but the number can never be compared to the number of job losses. Not at all.
It is not so easy to predict the future, but with the way AI is going, that future where there are just too many people out of jobs seems like a certainty.
A lot of people fear such times, but it's probably not really worth fearing.
For one if you start saving now and investing in lands and other things you'll at least have something to sustain you by then.
If this future happens, though, physical jobs like plumber, electrician, carpenter, mechanic, etc would soak up a lot of the workforce.
It seems a lot of the others not soaked up would have to rely on farming as farming is the only field that can never be oversaturated. If you can't sell your farm produce you and your family can eat them and be alright.
Humans evolved to survive on Agriculture rather than most of what we have now that keeps us away from mother nature.
The only thing that seems like a problem with a world like this is that money/wealth would be more centralized. Less and less people would have money for the purchase of what technology provides us with in this modern era.
Like expensive gadgets, luxurious transportation, globe trotting, etc. All of these may be harder to get if people are now mainly surviving on Agriculture and the other physical jobs.
People have talked about how Governments should ban AI now before it is too late. For reasons like job loss and the possibility of AI going rogue and attacking mankind.
I think proper regulation and monitoring is important for the latter, but for the former it is quite a dilemma. I'll say Governments should give two options, one: don't use AI to replace workers. Two: if you must then you have to pay more in tax for the Government to use for programs to help people who are out of jobs as a result of AI.
The major takeaway should be that all the extra money companies would make from not paying workers need to be taken back from the companies somehow. It wouldn't be fair if companies are making all that extra but paying nothing extra. This is what governments are for, to foster justice, and justice is balance. BALANCE.
A lot can be done in this aspect. I think the most important should be providing an easy transition into agriculture. Governments can provide farm machinery and other technologies that helps farmers.
If these are provided most people can be sustained properly with the Agricultural ventures they find themselves in. Agriculture is the most sustainable thing on earth, remember?
