My friends, I come to you with a confession, to share my latest literary adventure. While I have reviewed books in recent weeks, they were old reads, not new ones like the one I am about to recommend.

Exactly two weeks ago, I let myself be drawn by the invisible magnet of bookstores. I swear I did not have any specific title in mind, only the need to wander the aisles and marvel at the books. But one particular volume stopped me: "Risen from the Ground" by the great Josรฉ Saramago.

It was something like a hunch, one of those where reason does not apply. I picked it up with a strange certainty, and let me tell you something, I was not wrong.

alt

Starting to read Saramago is like learning to breathe again. I had read several of his novels before, but his prose never ceases to amaze me. His style, which many warn is difficult due to the scarcity of punctuation, I believe mirrors the natural flow of the author's thoughts. Sometimes it seems like a voice that whispers and sweeps you along simultaneously, so much so that the reading is never passive. It demands that you immerse yourself and abandon conventional rules until the magic happens and you become a privileged listener.

Upon opening the pages of this book, I found the story of a family: the Mau-Temos, in Portugal's Alentejo region. A story that, as the cover note suggested, is the story of all who have been trampled, of those who have worked land that does not belong to them and live with aching backs.

alt

This book is the life story of one of those peasants, and its narration is so eloquent that it makes you feel the mud on your hands, the relentless sun on your neck, and the humiliation in your soul. Suddenly, I found myself walking alongside the Mau-Temos, sharing their hunger, while Saramago described each character with infinite rawness and yet, compassion.

There were passages that took my breath away, like when work is repeatedly described as a biblical condemnation, or the relationship with the landowners as a machinery of exploitation greased with indifference and cruelty.

alt

Reading this book in 2025 is an act of vigilance because, although the settings and tools may have changed, those risen from the ground still exist, still fighting not to be returned to the dust. And perhaps for this reason, Saramago, with his lucid and despairingly hopeful gaze, reminds us that history sometimes moves in circles and that memory is the most powerful weapon of those who have no weapons.

It was difficult to close this book because at times I felt it was speaking directly to me, to my time, even to my own struggles to remain standing.

alt

That hunch in the bookstore that guided me to this text could have been draining, but it also brought the ability to see the pain of others, to understand it, and to witness that human nature which has the unique capacity to rise up again and again.

My advice: when you have a hunch about a book, never hesitate.

Until the next book!
