A Green Connection in My Garden ๐ŸŒฟ

alt

This community, the greenest and kindest I have been able to find, is like the corner where I usually come to confess, and precisely today, I want to share with you something I tell very few people. The thing is, there is a custom in my garden that, I confess, I have defended with a secret blush under the pragmatic gaze of my colleagues. It is a practice that is probably not found in any advanced botany manual, which is that I almost always plant my plants in company; I rarely leave them alone in a pot.

You may question how a woman of science holds such beliefs. While my hands dig a small hole for a second little plant next to the first one, I can feel something like a small voice inside me whispering that this way they will be happier.

alt

Can a plant really be happy? Of course, I don't believe there is evidence that vegetables feel emotions, and besides, happiness is a very human term, and yet, even though I know this, I still have the same impression.

Sometimes I look at them in the quiet of the evening, when I have just finished watering them, and I imagine they start a slow and silent conversation, not with words, of course, but with chemical whispers, perhaps with the brush of one leaf against another or with the subterranean intertwining of their roots. I think that maybe one shares the moisture it has to spare and the other can offer it shade.

alt

I refuse to admit it is a superstition, because superstitions are born from fear, and this is born from something else; it is born from the certainty that life needs its kind. Perhaps due to the premise I hold as a neurologist: that the brain is essentially a network of connections, and a single, isolated neuron is barely a point, and it is in its encounter with another that thought and action are born; so why should it be different with the rest of the living world?

The universe, since its formation, has gravitated towards the search for encounter, for collision; this is how atoms intertwine, cells specialize, birds fly in flocks, and we humans build civilizations. By placing two plants in the same pot, I am perhaps making a small-scale recreation of that principle of connection. It's just that sometimes I think their biology is written to flourish in community.

alt

Sometimes, facing a particularly lush and vibrant pot, I wonder if my impulse to plant them together is not an act of projection. It's possible, but I refuse to believe it's just that. So I will keep doing it, and I will keep playing the hostess who introduces one plant to the other, and perhaps believing that behind my back they turn and whisper secrets.

My neurologist self will continue in that endeavor to find answers about the brain's activities, but my gardener apprentice self, who believes in the happiness of simple things, prefers to think that in every shared pot, there are not two or three plants, but a small miracle of companionship.

alt

My friends, I believe that this belief I cling to, at the end of the day, is a truth that needs no more proof than seeing them grow lush before my eyes.
