I am returning to this beautiful community where I feel very comfortable sharing my experiences with reading and where I know, moreover, that I am heard and that you love literature as much as I do.
For the past three days, I have been living a particular experience because, as has happened so many times before, reading a novel serves as an escape from a reality that often becomes quite harsh. So I immersed myself in rereading one of the books I loved most in my youth, when reading detective fiction was all the rage in university classrooms.

alt

For the past three evenings, upon returning from my work at the hospital, I have been rereading The Maltese Falcon, while simultaneously imagining myself to be the cunning and intelligent Brigid O'Shaughnessy who sets the plot of this novel in motion. Of course, I don't live in the heart of San Francisco, but on a simple Caribbean island. Yet the illusion of being in that city described as full of fog, wet streets, and gloomy offices is truly appealing to me. In my imagination, I put on Brigid's shoes and walk through that microcosm of America during the Great Depression, where the American dream seems to have twisted into a nightmare full of ruthless ambitions.

alt

The character who fills the pages of Dashiell Hammett's work is Spade, the detective, who in some way ends up falling for the Brigid I embody these days. Samuel Spade, as visceral as he is ambiguous, appears to me as a tall, blond man, perhaps with an expression far from kindly. He is not a hero, but despite being surrounded by corruption, he tries to maintain a personal ethical code, which ultimately is the key to a resolution where, though he could have had it all, let's say, wealth and love, he defends his integrity in a society in a nosedive.
Of course, Spade is not alone in this story, where the character I embody earns her lies line by line. There is a whole universe of characters as memorable as they are sinister, all part of the frantic race for an object for which everyone is willing to betray and even kill.

alt

I have been fully living this novel-shaped puzzle, and I delight in watching Spade, who, without lucky breaks or supernatural intuitions, but only through hard work, psychological pressure, and cunning, manages to solve the two crimes that are the motive of the novel.
I don't know if you have seen the film adaptation where Humphrey Bogart plays Spade, but it seems as if the novel was a ready-made script for filming; perhaps that's why one can so easily recreate the scenes one by one.

alt

I adore the femme fatale character I am trying to live out while reading the novel, and the clear attraction I exert over Spade, and I feel myself slowly crumbling when he, at the end of the novel, remains alone in his office, knowing he has done the right thing but has lost any semblance of human warmth.
And, the irony! That masterful twist by the author reveals that the entire obsession, the deaths, and the betrayal were useless because the object was nothing more than a lie. This is undoubtedly a blow to the head for the simple reader.

alt

I don't know about you, but this experience of living in the shoes of one of the protagonists of our current read is something supreme and captivating.
From my afternoon seat, I recommend this novel to you.

Until the next book.

Y, ยกquรฉ ironรญa!
