The Power of Character in Leadership" is a book I read recently written by Dr. Myles Munroe, and I can truly say it is one of the most valuable books I have read concerning leadership. The book is based on the premise that real leadership is not about power or fame or followers. Rather, it's a matter of good character. Dr. Munroe said that people can like a leader for their talent or ability, but they will continue to trust and respect a leader for their character. I can't forget this simple message after reading the book.
I really liked the fact that this book was easy to understand. Dr. Munroe's explanations of deep ideas are simplified by using straightforward vocabulary and examples. He speaks of value, morals, ethics and principles—his own values that are the base of all great leaders. I couldn't have said it better myself: "Character is the most important element of leadership. It's a statement that is easy to make, but has a powerful message. It reminded me that if you are successful without character you are going to have a hard time maintaining it for long.
I was reflecting on my life as I was reading the book. I was more concerned about what I got than who I am when I worked to produce results. Though I was challenged in this book to think about myself rather than what I have accomplished, I found myself looking inward. It helped me understand that I need to lead myself first, to be honest, disciplined and have integrity before I can lead others well. I feel this is a lesson that any age and profession should all learn.
One of the lessons I loved was that, “Character is made every day.” Dr. Munroe explains that perfect character is not the trait that one is born with. It is developed through good decisions that we make daily, even when no one is around. This was very encouraging to me for it is saying that it is possible to become a better leader whenever one wants. Perfect is not mandatory. All we have to do is be ready to learn, grow and remain committed to doing the right thing.
Leadership is also about serving others, not controlling others is taught in the book. Trustworthy people are honest, reliable and humble, which is a trait of a good leader. This made me think of people recalling our behavior more than the roles we play. It starts with caring for others, and setting a good example by our actions.
This book has been recommended to students, teachers, business owners, pastors, parents, and anyone who would like to get better at leading. Whether you're not a big group of people, the lessons in this book can help you to be a better people in your family, workplace, school or community. I think a lot of what I see as a problem in leadership, could diminish if more people would be more focused on developing good character rather than just being focused on success.
Finally, The Power of Character in Leadership is an inspiring, teaching and challenging book. It brought to mind that the top achievement is not necessarily to be successful but to be trustworthy and reliable. I read the entire book and am now more motivated to live in my integrity, honesty, humility and self-discipline. If you want a book that will help you be a leader that people can really trust, I highly recommend this book. Lessons are straightforward, applicable, and meaningful in real life.
