No sé cuándo empezaré.

When the answer is not about choosing

alt

I have been mulling this over for weeks. It is not that I have an immediate urgency, but there is a restlessness that has been circling my mind since I started noticing that my clothes fit a little tighter and that the mirror gives back an image I do not entirely recognise.

In the middle of that silent discomfort, I have found myself listening to two voices that seem to be in permanent war.

One tells me that the best thing is to take drastic action, that I should make a radical change, a kind of reset in all areas of my life, and that what I need is a before and after. Something like a clear line that separates the current me from the me I want to become.

alt

Without a doubt, that voice has something romantic and heroic about it, and it sells me the idea that with willpower and determination I can reset my body and my habits within days.

The other voice is more measured, perhaps wiser. It speaks to me of the one percent rule, of improving a little bit every day, without fanfare, without grand declarations, and trusting that small steps, repeated consistently, end up taking me further than any leap of faith. That voice gives me peace, takes the pressure off, and tells me that I do not need to be perfect, just a little better than yesterday.

alt

I, being the indecisive person that I am, have spent weeks swinging from one side to the other without knowing which one to listen to. But last night, while tossing and turning in bed, an idea came to me that kept me awake: perhaps the mistake is not in choosing one over the other, but in thinking that they are mutually exclusive.

If I think about my excess weight, about those kilos that have arrived to stay without asking permission, I realise that I did not gain them overnight. It was a slow, silent process of small decisions that kept piling up. So why do I pretend they can disappear with one big decision?

At the same time, I also know that there are moments when you need a sharp change of direction, because sometimes the problem is not that we do not know what to do, but that we are so numbed by routine that we do not even feel the weight of what we are neglecting. And that is when it all clicked.

alt

It is not about choosing between radical change and gradual change. It is about using them in the right order, like when you start a car on a hill: you need a strong push at the beginning to overcome the resistance, but once you are in motion, what keeps the pace is consistency, not brute force.

So, when I finally decide to get serious about this, I already have my plan clear. I am not going to try to change my whole life overnight because I know it is not sustainable, but I am also not going to settle for improvements so subtle that they do not spark any enthusiasm in me.

What I am going to do is give myself one week of total focus: one week without sugar, without flours, without excuses. It might be a week of moving my body every day, even if reluctantly, but just one week. That will give me the proof that I can do it, that I am capable of getting out of autopilot and taking control.

alt

After that week, the important part will come. One day I will improve my diet with a small change, the next I will walk a few more minutes, the next I will learn to listen better to my body. Without rushing, but without stopping.

I do not know when I will start. Maybe next week, perhaps next month. But what I do know is that when I do, I will not do it from that old dichotomy, but from the certainty that change needs an initial spark and a flame to keep it alive.

In the end, it is not about arriving quickly, but about knowing when to do each thing. That is the true wisdom I want to take with me.
