(6pics) I ran late after sorting out my Strava reminders, so I did twenty loops around the teapot and rushed toward breakfast with Omid and the gang. Omid hadn’t shown up yet, and by some miracle of luck, he’d already bought eggs.

The guys had told me to remind him we were out of eggs so he’d buy some, but I didn’t say anything. Good thing he did it on his own—otherwise they’d have made me lay one myself.

Then came the watermelon. Same as yesterday—only a few more spanks old. Our breakfast chat was lively, though. The guys showed photos of their army buddies—some real scary faces in there—but poor Sajad didn’t fit in the frame.

Meanwhile, I was thinking how, back in our training camp, taking photos wasn’t even a thing. The place was like Auschwitz! The guys were laughing about how one of their squadmates would wear sunglasses for the morning parade, and then, when lights-out was announced, he’d start his skincare routine!

Picture it: in the dark, total silence, suddenly you hear the pop of an ointment lid and the wet squish of lotion on skin. And in that same squad, another guy had brought only dates and walnuts with him. I just want to know—didn’t they ever wonder about each other’s lives in there?!

We moved on. Over breakfast, someone brought up the idea of recording oral histories—how you’d go about interviewing your grandpa and documenting his stories.

That’s when I hit one of those familiar walls. The illusion that I know a lot—but after a few tries, I could feel the room quietly saying, “Yeah, thanks, but maybe let someone else talk…” And honestly, they were right.

I’m more the clown type, and this is serious work. You can’t joke your way through it. Sure, I’ve been doing daily storytelling for months now—photos, texts, following a few experts in the field—but it’s not like I’ve made a name for myself. So people have every right not to take me seriously.

But I chose this kind of life. And if I start sharing my stuff in more crowded spaces, it’ll only start fights. They call that “the challenge of contemporaneity.” Makes it hard to keep going. So... better to keep quiet—or just hint. And I love hinting.

I measure a person’s depth by how they pick up on hints. The world of subtle cues can be huge. Sometimes in the middle of my nonsense, I’ll drop a random Italian or Turkish word, or I’ll toss out a silly science fact. And from people’s reactions, I catch little moments that feel like miracles to me.

Once I hummed an old song by Aref Ghazvini, and to my surprise, this super sentimental guy sang the rest. Another time I made a joke out of Iranian mythology, totally out of place, and someone said, “That sounds like a Halloween ritual.”

Maybe that’s why most of my work seems meaningless—it’s all in the subtext. That, and the fact that I’m probably crazy! Anyway, today reminded me to take responsibility for my choices.

After breakfast we watched that boxing-robot movie with Hugh Jackman. Poor Seji sat behind me and couldn’t see properly—he kept flipping upside down trying to get a better view.

Later I went back to the teapot loop for the rest of my activity, when this Afghan guy in a beautiful blue outfit stopped his motorcycle beside me. He asked what sport I do that brings me here every day. I said, “I’m a runner. I run…”

And right as I said it, I realized that word felt too big for me. But apparently “runner” and “running” don’t mean much in their language Farsi Dari, because he smiled and asked, “You mean dowesh?” It sounded so sweet.

P.S. I think it’s Ali or Fatemeh’s birthday today—happy birthday to them. Maybe in a few years the social capacity will be calm enough for me to share their photo from a few years back. Ten more days until… no, I’ll save that for later.

(October 17, Friday)
