Hello dear friends,
After several months of war and internet blackouts, I’m back. During the time I was disconnected and unable to post, I kept writing in my personal journal. Now that the internet is available again, I’ve decided to become more active here.
Before I talk about yesterday, I want to say a few words about the months that have passed. I went through a difficult and gray period. After a large number of people in my country were massacred by the government, I found myself facing one crisis after another. Not only did my own mental health deteriorate to the point that I needed hospitalization, but my relationships with my partner and my family also became filled with turmoil and conflict.
Eventually, the most critical days came to an end, but they were replaced by long, exhausting, and joyless ones. Days no longer consumed by arguments, conflict, and rage, yet far from happy or uplifting. I fell into a deep depression. Alongside a crisis of meaning, feelings of worthlessness, and profound discouragement, financial hardship and rising prices wrapped themselves around us like a snake, coiling around our hands, feet, and necks, blocking the way forward and making it difficult even to breathe.
One of the struggles I face these days is watching some of my strongest qualities fade away. One of those qualities is courage, which has gradually given way to fear and doubt. I notice it most clearly in certain situations.
A while ago, while we were out walking with our dogs, we came across a flock of sheep guarded by two large and intimidating dogs. The shepherd immediately shouted at us not to move, warning that the dogs might attack. He told us to stay completely still. But I was terrified that a fight would break out between the dogs, so I tried to keep Milo away from them. In a split second, one of the dogs circled around me and lunged at him. Fortunately, it didn’t manage to bite him, and the shepherd came to our rescue. But after the flock had passed, I realized my legs were shaking. For days afterward, the image of that huge dog standing in front of me returned like a nightmare.
A few days ago, I found myself frightened once again.
We were out for a walk. Another one of our dogs, Smarty, had been injured recently and couldn’t keep up with us.
Every now and then, we would stop and wait for her to catch up. @kam5iz suggested that we continue farther down the road, but I immediately said no. I was surprised and irritated by what felt to me like a lack of consideration for Smarty’s condition. And then I couldn’t let go of that feeling. This is one of the typical features of depression: negative emotions become stubborn and linger much longer than they should.
We continued walking, and I picked a few walnuts along the way. Then we wandered over to a greengage orchard near our neighborhood. As evening fell, we heard the sound of a flock of sheep approaching. Kambiz suggested that we step aside and let them pass so the dogs wouldn’t notice us. But throughout the entire time we stood there, anxiety burned beneath my skin. I kept imagining that giant dog catching our scent and coming toward us. I imagined my dogs getting hurt. This time, my whole body trembled with fear.
After the flock had passed, we headed home. Late into the night, I scrolled through social media, checking in on friends and seeing how they were doing. Like me, they all seemed burdened and affected by everything that had happened in the country.
The feeling I had last night—and so often these days—was like a lump lodged in my throat. A constant sense of grief and suffocation. And it was with that same heaviness that I finally fell asleep.
Thank you for reading my post.
I hope brighter and better days lie ahead—for me, for the people of my homeland, and for everyone on this planet. I hope for a day when human life is valued everywhere on Earth, when this short life is no longer stained by war, violence, and killing. And I hope for a day when I can write here with a lighter heart.
And also happy power up day!
