Ficción: El regreso del hijo/ The return of the son (ESP/ ENG)

The return of the son
He didn't return when his mother fell ill. He told her, and everyone who asked about his return, that he too was very sick and unable to travel. He didn't return when his mother died either. People waited for him to bury the old woman, but he again claimed that his illness prevented him from making such a long journey. So, two days after her death, they buried the old woman, who died with her eyes open.
But the son returned home when he learned that his mother had left some money. This time, he took the first bus of the morning and made a six-hour journey, after a neighbor told him that a large sum of money had been found under the old woman's bed. The neighbor told him this that night, and at first light the next morning, the son packed a small suitcase and set off for town.

Upon arriving, the son didn't go to the cemetery to say his final goodbyes to his mother, nor did he buy flowers to take to her grave. He simply went to the neighbor's house to retrieve what his mother had left behind and had surely kept for a long time.
At the office, the neighbor, who knew him, asked how his health was. The son remembered that he had used illness as an excuse not to return to the village, and now he was there, so he tersely replied, "I'm a little better."
But upon receiving the money, he strangely felt a sharp pain shoot through his back and one of his legs. He took the money and went to rest at his mother's house, since the long journey had surely made his bones stiff.

At home, he remembered his mother, who had always had a bad impression of him: "People think you're good, but you don't love anyone, not even me who gave you life," the woman would repeat whenever she could.
The house hadn't changed, it was just neglected, perhaps because his mother, with her illness, couldn't notice anything, the son thought. He went to his room upstairs, but preferred to go into his mother's room. A strong smell of dirt and urine made him forget for a moment the pain he was carrying. However, as best he could, the son lay down on the bed and the pain became a stabbing pain in the back of his head. He threw himself down on the mattress naked and closed his eyes: "I need to rest," he told himself as he closed his eyes. Days later, when they found him dead, everyone believed that he hadn't just died from his illness, but had returned to die where his mother had died: "He was always an exemplary and loving son," they all said, covering their noses against the putrid smell emanating from his decomposing body.
