Venganza: una historia de terror

alt

Revenge, a horror story

alt

I have a lifelong friend who is like a sister to me, and her family is like my own family. Her parents and siblings are very dear to me and considerate, and I see no other way to repay their affection than with more affection and respect. With them, I had one of the strangest and most instructive experiences I have ever had, which I would like to share with you.

My friend has a sister who suddenly became ill overnight: her young skin began to wither and water blisters began to appear on her body, which turned into large, purulent sores. Fearing the worst, they began to take her to specialists, who, after misdiagnoses and ineffective medications, accepted their inability to combat the disease that threatened to take the life of this 27-year-old girl.

With each medical examination, my friend's sister's health became more precarious: her hair had fallen out and she even had trouble walking. Those who saw her did not hesitate to say that perhaps it was a strange, deadly disease that was impossible to fight. However, there was someone who said to take her to a very good witch doctor who lived at the end of the world.

Those of us who live in Venezuela, and perhaps all Hispanic Americans, know that there are illnesses that cannot be cured with traditional medicine, so my friend's family, with great faith, took this girl to the house of a woman who was renowned as a healer and for seeing what no one else could see.

What this woman said as soon as she saw this girl without hair, covered in sores and unable to walk, left everyone looking terrified:

“The evil you did has come back to you. I am not the one who can cure you. The only thing that can save you is a dog, which will come to you, lick you, and take away what you have.”

As we later learned, my friend's sister had sent her ex's new girlfriend to have “witchcraft” performed on her, as she had not forgiven him for leaving her for her, and the evil had come back to her. Her condition was the result of a stupid and diabolical revenge she had plotted to destroy her rival, as she wanted her boyfriend back; but as in life, everything you give comes back to you, she immediately suffered the consequences of what she had done.

I know that many people will doubt this story, and I did too at the time, but what we should never doubt are the consequences of seeking revenge: in the end, the person who suffers the most is the one who plans, with premeditation and malice, what they are going to do to someone else, not only because the time spent planning revenge can be exhausting and anger can be like battery acid that destroys you from within, but also because karma has incredible accuracy and, as I said above, what you give comes back to you.

It is very easy to respond to others in kind: to make them pay for the harm they have done to us. However, that visceral action can have serious consequences. If you do wrong, ask for forgiveness; if someone asks for your forgiveness, forgive them; and if you want revenge, remember this story. Thinking about revenge keeps the wound open, so let it go, and you will see how the wound heals.
