An Embroidered Napkin vs. Virtual "Prime": How My 11-Year-Old Son Tried to Become a Game "Businessman"
Hello everyone. Adult life is all about taking responsibility for someone else. Lately, my son has been acting strange. He suddenly wanted to have more cash. He decided to exchange all his pocket coins for paper bills, started looking closely at some rare collectible coins, and even planned to exchange the Euros his grandmother had gifted him.
— "Euros are a hard currency, son. Are you saving up for something specific? Tell me, and I’ll help once I understand what's going on."
— "I just want to have paper money, a lot of it."
— "But why? There must be a goal behind wanting that much money."
He was clearly nervous but finally opened up to me late in the evening. He was terrified of my reaction. He looked scared, constantly rubbing his hands together — a classic childhood gesture when emotions and anxiety run high. He had been hiding this secret for several days, and when he finally trusted me, I laid out the hard truth. Now I wonder: did I ruin it? Will he ever trust his mom again, knowing that I will just shatter his illusions next time?
As it turned out, my son wanted to buy a "Prime Status" for CS2 (Counter-Strike 2). The moment I heard this, it hit me hard. I immediately remembered how his father used to play Warcraft day and night, genuinely believing he could build up and sell his gaming character. My mind instantly connected it to online casinos.
He is 11 years old. He is incredibly smart, but he needs to study and invest in himself and his real-world development. His main responsibilities right now are his schoolwork and cleaning up after his pet guinea pig. Though, to be honest, after his "cleaning," I usually have to clean up after both of them. He doesn't want to do anything else around the house, or he does it so reluctantly that it takes hours of begging. Sometimes, when I’m exhausted, it just feels easier to do it quickly myself rather than spend energy explaining it over and over.
But this time, I invested my time into investigating his hidden "business plan." I needed to find out what this gaming status actually is. It turns out my son truly believed that this Prime status would allow him to earn real money, get legendary loot boxes, and sell virtual items. But the harsh reality of Web2 gaming is that you cannot legally withdraw that money back to a bank card. It's locked in the system.
I get it, times have changed. But when I was 12 years old, I embroidered a napkin with my own hands, went to the Vernisage (a famous local open-air art and craft market), and sold it for 25 hryvnias. I was boundlessly happy because that money came from real labor, craft, and effort.
To be completely honest, I have an addictive, adventurous streak myself. But I’ve learned to tame this feeling and channel it into the right direction. I have never paid for video games, though I've had my own financial missteps. The biggest mistake of my life was taking a tech loan from Pravex Bank many years ago — a predatory loan with compound interest layered upon interest. It took us years of hard work to finally close it. But that gave me an immunity to "losing." I actually appreciate losing sometimes because that's just how real life works. When you win constantly, it feels fake, like someone pre-programmed it. In fact, I believe all gaming algorithms are rigged nowadays. No matter what the player does, everything is predetermined by the game developers. These games are designed to extract money from children, not to entertain them.
Oh God, I invest so much into his education, yet he dreams of something completely useless in the real world. I was secretly hoping he was saving up for a gift for someone — maybe a girl at school... After all, for my last birthday, he bought me a hot glue gun, and it's wonderful. I use it, praise him, and feel so much joy. I would support almost any of his real-world purchases, but not throwing money into a computer. Not after his father chose the virtual blocks of Minecraft over our real family, leaving my son and me behind.
Yet, it's fascinating to see that when he has a goal, he pursues it stubbornly using every method he can think of. He has a strong, persistent character.
So, I told him straight:
— "Son, believe me, this thing is worth absolutely nothing. It’s cheese in a mousetrap. You can only earn real money through intelligence and hard work. Period. There are no shortcuts. Those guys who will get your money will drive fancy sports cars, while you will keep sending them your savings and walking on foot."
Right now, we decided to let the situation sleep for a night. The most important thing is that we now have the information. He won't be fooled by fairy tales of easy money anymore, and that is a massive win. Maybe he will lose interest over time, just like he did with his old toys.
Looking at it from a broader perspective, video games keep players trapped in the Web2 ecosystem, where your earnings are forever locked inside someone else's program. Hive.blog is Web3. I have previously suggested that he start creating his own content here. He even started writing down his ideas in a small notebook and typing text drafts in his phone notes. It's just that kids naturally look for the easiest path to earn.
But as an educator, I decided to find a compromise. We made a deal: if he pulls his school grades up from 5s and 7s to 9s and 10s (out of 12 on our local grading scale), we will return to this conversation.
Dear readers, have you or your children ever faced similar situations with virtual illusions? How did you handle them? Did you manage to find a compromise and preserve your child's trust when you had to shatter their illusions? I would be very happy to read your thoughts and experiences in the comments.
