To Judge and Be Wrong || Juzgar y equivocarse - Prompt #50 (ENG-ESP)
English
I remember a day when I took a triciclo on a street in the city where I live. I asked who was last in line and no one answered, even though there was a bunch of people standing ahead on the sidewalk in the shade. It turned out there was no line order, and a disabled man told me: —Well, just follow right behind me. Just then, a triciclo arrived and the disabled man told me: —Well, you get on the remaining seat because I'll go next on the other triciclo.
I got on, and the people who had been in the shade—who hadn't paid any attention to me when I asked for the last person in line—started shouting at me to get off, that it wasn't my turn, that I had arrived last. I didn't get off: if there was no line, if none of them had even turned to look at me while I was shouting my lungs out asking who was last, then I would simply take the spot the disabled man gave me and that was it. And while the whole line started walking toward me, the triciclo driver pulled away and off I went 😂.
Inside, there was a woman staring right at me and I braced myself to defend myself: she was an older lady and surely wouldn't have liked my boldness; I judged that she was judging me with her eyes and her mind. But the people inside the triciclo, mostly very elderly men, instead told me I did the right thing: because while I was shouting to find out who was last, the line had stayed silent resting in the shade, and when they saw the triciclo arrive they barely stirred to move, because between the sun and being clueless, I don't know what those people were leaning toward more.
Well, the lady I thought was going to say something mean to me agreed with those gentlemen and I relaxed. Until halfway through the ride she started talking trash about young women, saying that they sell themselves on the streets to men for money—even for as little as 100 dollars—that men don't have money for that, and what do I know. I had to tell her that not all young women nowadays fall into the same thing; I used myself as an example and also gave all my friends as examples, and afterwards she said: —I'm speaking generally.
Well, the lady ended up talking about a series of things I don't agree with, like how the youth are the ones keeping the country in crisis and the government has zero blame. Between one argument and another, and without falling into disrespect, I had to correct her on several things, and in the end she got annoyed with another lady who supported my arguments, and they even ended up being disrespectful to each other.
Anyway, the first time I saw the lady when I got on the triciclo, I didn't judge her as someone out of touch with time and space; it just caught my attention that she kept staring at me seriously and I thought she was making a quick judgment about me. I judged her later when I got to know how she thought based on what she talked about. More wrong than a 5-year-old child. But I didn't entirely blame her for her way of thinking, since being a person of that age, during her childhood and youth she was indoctrinated by the concepts of Cuban communism, and at her age it is very difficult to change her personality.
