"You're up."
"Me again. Why am I always first?"
"Because you're called, 'up first.'"
That was how it was decided. I hadn't written a freewrite for over a week and I have loads of prompts to choose from.
'Tell a Joke,' certainly was vying for the first story, but 'up first' had to go first
Then, a 'tremor' coming from the 'birds nest.'
A bird's head popped out and asked;
"Seriously, you have these kind of rules?"
"No, I don't," I replied. "I just saw the prompts and thought to do 'up first' first."
"But 'tell a joke' was itching to go. Why didn't you let that prompt start?"
"Because, I don't have a funny joke at hand."
"Maybe you could have asked me," said the bird. "Maybe, you could have written a story where I tell the joke."
"Can you?" I asked. "Can you tell the joke?"
"Yes," said the bird. "I know some great ones. I do it all the time."
"Does anybody laugh?" I asked.
"Yes, I will lift the leaves off this tree."
"Go on then," I said.
"Go on then," said the bird.
"I meant you. Go on then."
"Go on then," said the bird.
"Why are you telling me to go on then?" I asked. "You told me that you would tell a joke that would lift the leaves off the tree."
"But you're the writer," said the bird. "You have to write the joke."
"I told you, I'm not in the joking mood."
"That's not very professional," said the bird.
"I'm a writer, not a comedian."
"You should be," said the bird. "It's good to make people laugh."
Then I thought for a minute and said to the bird;
"Let's forget about my story. Just tell a joke. Just so that we can have a giggle."
"I know your game," said the bird. "You're trying to get me to tell the joke because you can't think of one."
He was, of course, correct.
"I'm off to get a nice blue smoothie."
The bird started flapping up and down.
"It's green, it's green, it's green," shouted the bird.
"Thank you for pointing that out," I said. "But I don't live by these types of rules."
