12 September 2026, Freewriters Community Daily Writing Prompt Day 3224: walked into a bar
16-year-old Tom Stepforth started telling what he thought was a good joke … only to have it take on a new life owing to his little cousins and their friends.
“So,” he said to his 21-year-old cousin Melvin Trent, “a boy walked into a bar, and...”
This got the attention of seven-year-old Amanda Ludlow, who was playing with Tom's eight-year-old cousin Gracie Trent on the porch.
“Bruh Tom, is he all right, though?” Amanda said as she came running.
“See, this is the problem in Lofton County,” Gracie's sister eleven-year-old sister Velma said. “We can't expect people who don't even know how to keep buildings up in Shortport to know how to build things so they are safe for children.”
“Ain't it the truth, Velma, ain't it the truth,” Gracie said. “You probably should do a story on it, Tom.”
“Yeah, do a story on it so other kids can be safe!” Amanda said, “and yeah, you can quote me.”
“See, what I need is a map so I can go fix all this stuff, and some permits,” Amanda's six-year-old brother Grayson said. “Do you have the GPS thingy in your phone, Bruh Tom, because then all I need is a ride and a mini jackhammer, and we're gonna have all this stuff fixed up by Friday!”
“I don't know if my GPS is even set up for all that!” Tom said.
“Hey, bruh, I got you – whatever you need!” Tom's nine-year-old brother Vertran said and proceeded to take Tom's phone and start changing the settings.
“How do you even know my password?” Tom said.
“Any time you think 1234 is a good idea, just be thankful it's me you have as a brother,” Vertran said.
“How did we get here?” Tom said.
“The real question is, did the boy get home from the hospital OK, after he walked into the bar?” Amanda said.
Melvin Trent got a good laugh out of the situation even without Tom having the joke go quite the way he intended!
