22 October 2026, Freewriters Community Daily Writing Prompt Day 3264: costume
“Listen, if you do it right, you don't need a costume – I love the way I dress every day so I don't need to change. I mean, I would love for Papa and Grandma to get me a new sun dress every day in the summer, but my honorary great-grandma Selene Slocum-Lofton Cousin Harry's grandma says, 'Embrace the creativity of taking one thing and style it all the way out.'”
“Ain't it the truth, Eddie, ain't it the truth.”
Eight-year-old Edwina Ludlow and eight-year-old Gracie Trent were sitting on the Ludlow porch in their sun dresses, to which Edwina had added a kimono and sunglasses and her glittered up pink sandals.
“If overdressed for lemonade was a person, though,” nine-year-old George Ludlow said to nine-year-old Milton Trent.
“Yeah, but here's the deal, George,” Milton said. “It's like when we voluntarily co-ground and suddenly our lives become peaceful … when Edwina and Gracie are sipping lemonade and Edwina feels dressed to the nines, Edwina doesn't bother anyone else and Gracie isn't making coffee from God's own water coming from the downspout.”
“But did it taste good, though?” George said.
“They won't let me touch coffee,” Milton said, “but Mom liked it, Melvin threw up, and Dad drank all of his, so the jury is still out.”
“I wonder how that would be with lemonade – I mean, if you had the right leaves on the roof the day you make it – Grandma likes to put a bay leaf in lemonade,” George said.
“We just gotta wait for the next rain to find out – maybe we try it ourselves first,” Milton said. “My mother makes batch lemonade concentrate in big ice cubes, so we just need to get a few and then put them under the downspout and find out once we find out what kind of leaves to throw up there.”
“I think maple and sweet gum would be great!” George said.
