I think the weather in Denmark has decided to apologise and make it up for the cold and nasty welcome I received yesterday. Today was bright sunny, almost no wind and no precipitation.
I had a day off, as I needed to assist to my Mom (she had had an accident and it’s the reason of my staying in Denmark). Once we have completed her itinerary of doctors/pharmacies/shops, I decided to go for a long walk. Needed that after driving 900km yesterday.
I went to Bangsbo Fort - a set of cannons on a fortified hill overlooking Kattegat (the strait that separates Denmark from Sweden). The fortifications were part of so called “Atlantic Wall” which was built during WWII by Germany to protect their homeland against allied sea attack.
Bangsbo, strategically placed on the Kattegat, was a perfect location if one wanted to control access to the Baltic Sea. A low, but steep post glacial hill, overlooking the strait, was like designed for placing cannons on its top. A set of 15cm cannons, anti-aircraft battery and a radar station was built. Complete with bunkers and all the needed infrastructure. It was quite smartly built into the hill
As the days in northern Denmark are pretty short in late November, I didn’t have much time to explore. But since I am staying with my Mom till Christmas, I hope I will have chance to return on a weekend and see it in details. I also need to read about the history and technical data. Then I will write a more complete post.
