Many years ago, I remember watching a video explaining the concepts of faucets and sinks. It wasn't about plumbing, of course. It was one of those videos that crypto natives tend to stumble across sooner or later.
The basic idea is simple. Every healthy system needs both. You need ways for value to enter the ecosystem, and you need ways for it to leave. Without that balance, things eventually stop working the way they were intended.
That idea has been sitting in the back of my mind ever since, and now that I've launched Snapie Points, I've found myself thinking about it again.
Sure, Snapie Points aren't cryptocurrency, and that's perfectly fine. But that doesn't mean I can't borrow a few lessons from the people who have spent years designing digital economies.
Mood badges are an obvious sink. Every time you buy one, those points are effectively removed from circulation. The problem is that unless I plan on releasing thousands of moods, which sounds like a terrible idea, that alone isn't enough. I need more sinks. More importantly, I need sinks that are actually fun.
This morning an idea popped into my head.
What if Snapie.io had a little loot chest that appeared every single day?
You could spend a handful of Snapie Points for a chance to open it. Those points would be burned, creating a healthy sink, but in return you might find something unexpected inside.
Maybe you win more Snapie Points.
Maybe you unlock a rare collector's badge to proudly display on your profile.
Maybe you receive a participation trophy.
Maybe you get a horribly written AI haiku.
Or maybe, just maybe, you receive an NFT containing the legendary photo of @gtg drunk. I've been told such a picture exists, although nobody has been able to confirm the rumors.
The point isn't really the rewards.
The point is to have fun.
Somewhere along the way, I think we've all become a little too serious. Every feature has to be optimized. Every token has to have utility. Every announcement has to sound important.
I'm guilty of it too.
But sometimes it's okay to build something simply because it makes people smile.
Honestly, I think the most enjoyable part for me would be creating all these ridiculous little collectibles. Weird badges. Silly jokes. Tiny digital treasures that people can discover and share.
Maybe some of them become surprisingly rare. Maybe people start collecting them. Maybe people trade stories about the weirdest thing they've ever pulled from a chest.
I don't know.
I'm just thinking out loud.
That's how I like to build these days.
What do you guys think?
