Many of these engines ended up being sold for scrap metal, so it's always a treat to see one that has been restored going down the tracks to attend special events.
I remember hearing stories of my grandma rushing out to get her freshly washed and dried laundry off the clothes line before the afternoon train arrived in town. She knew that her clean clothes would be covered in soot if she didn't get them indoors before the train got there.
