One of the most difficult tasks is house chores, especially washing dishes and clothes, and cleaning the toilet too.
I would pile up clothes like heaps until I had almost emptied my wardrobe before I would wash them. Washing bulky clothes is another issue; instead of washing all at once, I would select the ones I might use for a week or two and return the remaining ones to the laundry.
It's not easy, but I have to do it because no one would do it for me unless I pay for a laundry service.
I continued my routine until one particular morning when I was supposed to wear a white t-shirt and a black skirt to church. I was a choir member back then, so the dress code for that particular Sunday was white and black.
I thought that I had washed these clothes; therefore, I didn't bother to check whether they were neat or not.
On Sunday morning, after waking up late, I rushed to the bathroom to bathe. Then it was time to dress up, but I couldn't find my white shirt in my wardrobe. I packed all the clothes in my wardrobe and dropped them on my bed. I had littered everywhere with clothes, yet I could not find it.
So, I decided to check my laundry. Throwing every piece of clothing on the floor, I found it—my white shirt—and even the black skirt that I thought was clean.
I just sat down, packing everything back. I was frustrated; there was no way I could meet up even if I washed those clothes that morning because our Sunday service always starts at 8:00 a.m. prompt, and it was already 7:25 a.m.
My mum always knows what is going on. As usual, I would go late to church because I always look for something I misplaced every time, but this time it was a different case.
She came to my room, asking me what happened, as my room was upside down. Then I explained to her what really happened.
Then she gave me hers; you can imagine how it looked on my body. Although she was not chubby, I’m slimmer, which makes it obvious that the clothes were not mine. I used a handkerchief to clean the black skirt and sprayed perfume on it.
I ironed the shirt, used a waist belt, and everything was fitted except my sleeves; they were so big, but I wore it like that. I could not look at people's faces in the church that day to avoid their smiling faces; those smiles were from hypocrites.
My siblings, who had gone to church ahead of me, made the matter worse. They were just laughing and exchanging glances. I had to go home even before the benediction.
My sisters did not stop laughing even when I got home. What an embarrassment! Then, in my annoyance, I took out all my clothes, washed, dried, and spread them on the line that same day. It's a tough job, but someone's got to do it, and that person is me.
I also make sure that I don't allow my laundry to fill up before washing my clothes. I make sure to stand up for myself whenever I can because I can't afford to be ridiculed.
Another most Bugus chores I detest is washing of dishes. Not only me, even my siblings. My mother created a roster for us then for dish washing but we someone find a way to release the work on our last born.
We would give him some money so he can help to wash dishes but along the line he changed as he matured he started demanded higher amount or even refuse to do it claiming he's busy.
I was the first person to withdrew from the deal, I began to do my chores well because I don't have much money. When I finished my senior secondary school, my mum made sure that only my junior sibling wash dishes, clean the house, all I do is cook and I loved it.
Although, when I was in 100 level I couldn't help but do every chores by myself, because no one would it for me. Sometimes I would leave plates for two or three days before washing not until I discovered maggots in my plate one day.
It was so irritating that I nearly throw up, since that day I always washed my plates immediately.
Therefore, I trained myself to be hard-working and selfless, and even when I have the strength, I don't care if I'm living with a dirty person because I will always clean up.
