Fact : Dehydration causes backpain
Yes, that's the fact. Lack of enough water in your body can lead to backpain.
It's no news that the body is made up of 60-70% water and almost all cell, tissue and organs of the body need water to function.
How dehydration affects your back has a direct connection to its central supporting structural which is the spine. And this is because water is a factor that impacts your spine.
The spine like most organs of the body is comprised of a large volume of water and this is one of the reason why dehydration could lead to back pain.
Your spine is essentially made up of vertebrae (bones), discs, nerves and the spinal cord. The spine supports your body, bearing the weight of your body and also helps your movements. The discs most especially have a defining function.
The discs are soft, flat and round structures that sits between the vertebrates. They act in cushioning the vertebrates movement.
The discs action as a shock absorber is made possible because it has a soft gelatinous core made up largely of water.
Everyday movements cause wear and tear on the discs. This is because of the pressure exerted on it. Consequently this leads to a loss of water contained in it's core.
This means a reduction in the size of the disc and therefore it's cushioning ability. Invariably the pressure is redistributed on the outer ring of the disc.
With the pressure now resting on the outer rings of the disc, the vertebrae has indirect contact with sensitive nerve endings running through the spine and leads to pain.
However, if the body is well hydrated, the spine is able to rehydrate the core of the disc with the help of gravity which draws water into the core.
Also, a disc that is continually subject to Dehydration can lead to even worse conditions.
Summarily, next time you feel pain at your back, it's a reminder to keep hydrated.
