As we get older, back pain can become an issue. There are naturally various things that change within the body as we get older. Our joints, our spine and our muscles will undergo different changes, and each of these changes can increase the chances of us suffering with bad back pain. Though having said that, not everyone gets back pain when they get older.
The primary reason why older people get back pain is the aging of the spine which comprises of the vertebrae and discs between the vertebrae; these act as a cushion between the bones. As the person gets older they can start to take more fluid into the discs, causing the discs to decrease in size and there will be less of a cushion between the bones and the spine will be less flexible and the body will end up with bad back pain, in extreme cases spinal degeneration or stenosis can occur.
It can also occur from the aged person have arthritis. This can happen in the spine through wear on the cartilage on the joints (osteoarthritis) which is painful inflammation of the joints when inactive and it can also be caused when osteoporosis (a condition whereby the bones become less strong) causes osteoporotic vertebrae to fracture when posture is wrong which means the pain would get even worse.
Aging plays a big role in how the back will cope. Inactivity can increase back pain due to muscles not being strengthened, therefore added pressure would be put on the spine. The way in which you hold your posture can have a massive impact as it could be poor when reaching down to pick something up, it can be poor in bed, or you could also be too heavy.
When you are suffering from back pain you cannot even do basic tasks such as walking, moving about or even putting socks on and this may lead to depression, therefore people who are getting older must keep their backs healthy so they can still be able to live independently.
Luckily for us people over certain ages there are various things that can be done to prevent or reduce back pain such as exercising, going for walks or even doing yoga or swimming and having a healthy weight along with not having a poor posture. Ergonomic furniture also has its benefits and if things become serious an operation can really help alleviate the pain and the effect it has.
All in all, I think back pain has become a growing problem as people are getting older and this can be combated if one wishes to and you are able and chances of them happening as much as possible so life can still be
