I drove home today. I took the northerly route that is a little longer. The views are much better and there is less traffic.

This is Lake Längelmävesi in Kangasala, a small town close to Tampere.

Längelmävesi is part of a system of lakes connecting most of the region of Pirkanmaa. Ships carry tourists on lake cruises on routes that are hundreds of kilometers long in total.

I had to stop in Sahalahti about 13 km further in the east to buy fuel. The pump was in front of this abandoned garage. Sahalahti is 32 km from Tampere and the Saarioinen food factory in Sahalahti but there are signs of decay in the community whereas Tampere itself is a huge construction site with the light rail being built and new residential buildings cropping up everywhere. I once checked out the local property market. Relatively new houses are much cheaper than in Kangasala just 15 kilometers to the west. Sahalahti has been part of Kangasala since 2009 when it ceased to be a independent municipality.

After driving another 15 km to the east, I arrived at Kuhmalahti, another former municipality now part of Kangasala. This village store is not part of any chain. I read in the paper that a family has owned it for a few years and they're not even locals. Or weren't until they moved to Kuhmalahti from Nokia over 60 km away. I bought some chili nuts because I was hungry. I bet they make most of their money in the summer.

Wow! A telephone booth. I haven't seen one in a very long time.

Of course, there was no phone but the phone book was there! I haven't seen let alone used a payphone in Finland for maybe 20-25 years! I think the last one was in use maybe 10 years ago.

I went on my merry way. Soon after Kuhmalahti I turned southeast toward Padasjoki. But first I had to drive inside the region of Central Finland, eveuncovered@eveuncovered's home turf, for a bit. (Central Finland is pretty large. It takes hours to drive from one end of it to the other even using the highways.)

Proof of exit.

This area is as far away from all the centers of the regions that border each other here: Jyväskylä (Central Finland), Tampere (Pirkanmaa), and Lahti (Päijänne Tavastia) as possible. There are virtually no new buildings here. Only forests, lakes and scarcely any fields. This area is at a higher elevation than its surroundings.

This is the marina in Padasjoki on the southwestern shore of Lake Päijänne some tens of kilometers from where I took the previous photos.

That boat belongs to the fire and rescue department. That's a pretty powerful motow.

That was supposed to be a traditional Midsummer bonfire but open fire was forbidden this year because of the dry and windy weather.
