Adventures in the Forest
Little Nilk didn't think twice; she slung the large backpack over her back, too big and heavy for her body, containing bread, peanut butter, chocolate cookies, two bananas, an apple, two water bottles, a hat, a pair of socks, matches, rope, a flashlight, a small knife, a flare gun that Uncle Tom had given her, a map, and a compass.
Her friend Bryan was missing in the woods and she thought she could find him, so mid-morning without making a sound she left her house and headed to the woods, she boarded a bus that dropped her off a little closer, she could see many people everywhere but she was able to slip away and go unnoticed.
What began as a rescue adventure soon turned into anguish. Nilk thought she knew the forest well, but as she ventured deeper, she realized nothing was familiar. She didn't know where she was. The sun was beginning to set, and the trees were her only companions. She continued walking, following the chirping of crickets. Exhausted, she lowered her backpack to retrieve her flashlight and look for shelter. When she turned on the flashlight, she saw an old cabin, seemingly straight out of a fairy tale. Without hesitation, she opened the door. It was empty. She went inside, headed to the stove, and lit a fire. She was very cold and hungry. She ate a little and fell asleep in a corner of the cabin.
When she woke up the next morning, her friend Bryan was by her side. Little Nilk couldn't have been happier, knowing she wasn't alone and that Bryan was safe and sound, looking around the blue backpack. She knew that with those things they would survive and find their way home. Of course, they did return home. Nilk was greeted like a heroine who had saved Bryan. Then came the scolding from her parents for the danger she had faced in the woods, which had filled them with anguish, fear, and worry...
