Miguel's Chappy Motorcycle Seeing that picture reminded me of my friend Miguel. Miguel was always labeled the black sheep of the family and the school too, back when they made us believe that being the black sheep was a bad thing. But for me, he was a special person, my role model when we were in high school. Miguel didn't follow the mold; he was the one who raised his voice when the rest of us stayed silent, the one who defended his classmates, the one who questioned the teachers. He was a friend to his friends. During a school holiday, he started working as a bricklayer and bought a small, lightweight, but very stylish red Chappy motorcycle. Perhaps it was one of the models that existed in the 80s. That motorcycle was the talk of the town; everyone wanted to ride it, to go for a spin with Miguel, except me, and for two reasons: one, because I was only attracted to motorcycles to look at them, not to ride them—I still don't like them—and two, because my aunt was very strict. If she saw me or anyone told her they saw me on a motorcycle, there would be a huge fight when I got home. Everyone insisted that I get on it, even if just for a short ride, but I never did, and believe me, that beautiful motorcycle was a real temptation.

Agradecida siempre!

In one of those rebellious and defiant moments, Miguel decided to go to Pariaguan, his hometown, on his red Chappy motorcycle. We were living in Aragua de Barcelona at the time. I think that motorcycle was the third one I'd ever seen; they weren't as common back then as they are now. When I found out Miguel was going on the trip, I was terrified. I imagined so many things that could happen to him that I had to wait until the following Monday, after a long Saturday, to learn that the only problem he encountered was running out of gas less than halfway there. A truck gave him a ride to Pariaguan, where he had to leave the motorcycle for a long time until someone brought it to him in a pickup truck. Miguel continued riding his Chappy around, running errands for his grandmother, giving rides to girls and boys, until he sold it when his high school graduation came around. That was the end of the Chappy, and we haven't seen each other since, although our friendship has remained.
We stay connected through social media. Being the "sheep" (a term of endearment for someone who is part of the group) took him all the way to Spain, where he's lived for over fifteen years. Always grateful!
