I gaze at the image through the crisp glass of my monitor here in Canada, where autumn is already beginning to tint the sidewalks a melancholic gold, and retirement grants me the rarest luxury of all: time. On the other side of the continent—in the warm, challenging south of Venezuela—my friend José (lanzjoseg@lanzjoseg) has frozen a moment in a photograph for his now-classic Saturday ritual. Perhaps he took it in his own workspace or in some corner of the university where he teaches economics; but beyond the coordinates, what I see before me is no mere workstation: it is a contemporary temple of work and creation.

Algorithm and Life

I recognise the layout of that ecosystem instantly. Although my days are now far removed from the fatigue of coding and endless compilations, my eyes feel right at home amidst so many screens. To the left, dominating the scene in strict "dark mode," two monitors display cascading text: lines of syntax, parameters, warnings, and debug logs that only an IT professional or a die-hard developer could decipher with ease. The soft glow of those terminals contrasts with the presence—on the main keyboard—of those striking red keys in the WASD zone. Seeing them, it is impossible not to smile and think of my brother Jhonny, who could lose all track of time while annihilating imaginary aliens in intergalactic campaigns. Yet, I do not believe this space belongs exclusively to a gamer. The secondary keyboard to the left and the ergonomic arrangement of the peripherals betray the presence of someone who produces, assembles, and solves problems within software architecture.

And then there is the human element—that detail which breaks the coldness of the algorithms. Above, suspended on the right-hand wall like a living painting, a screen displays a period-piece or steampunk-style scene: youthful faces adorned with Victorian collars, inquisitive gazes, and the gears of antique clockwork in the background. It is a classic device used by the solitary programmer—a visual companion to break the isolation and ease the tension of hunting down an elusive bug in the console. Just below, in the bottom-right corner, a laptop screen shows the time: 8:59. Is it morning or night? In these technological sanctuaries, linear time often dissolves; it could just as easily be the start of an academic day or the final, weary moments of an all-night vigil. Only the person who inhabits this space knows for sure.

To decipher this scene is to reconstruct the tenacity of the person who dwells within it. In southern Venezuela—where electricity and connectivity often demand a daily dose of heroism and patience—setting up a workstation of this scale (with multiple processors, portable cooling units, and a tangle of cables carefully routed toward a power source) is an act of pure intellectual resistance. It is a portrait of someone who—whether they are running econometric models or programming solutions for clients on the other side of the planet—defies the limitations of their immediate environment to connect with the global village.

From my own temperate corner in the North—retired, yet forever fascinated by the everyday miracles of technology—I view this photograph not as a collection of plastic and circuitry, but as an invisible bridge. Between a university classroom in Bolívar and my study in Canada, between code I don’t fully grasp and my brother’s visions of spaceships, a shared passion for screens remains the common language that draws us together to observe, to think, and to write.
